Brohm - Woodson Debate

Featured Replies

It's not a joke and I cannot believe you are not seeing my point. A solid running game always helps a QB by keeping the defense off balance. You can gear your defense towards defending the pass on most downs (focusing on pass coverage and pass blitzes, etc). It is not all about dropping 8 men into coverage. Otherwise, every team UK played when Couch was there would have done that, and they most certainly did not. It should be much easier to defend a one dimensional team then a more balanced attack like UL has this season.

Why doesn't every NFL team drop 8 into coverage on Manning on nearly every play? And we can both agree that he is much better than Brohm or Woodson can't we?

I agree that a solid run game is an advantage, and Louisville takes advantage of it by riding it into the endzone. Petrino is a creative but stubborn play caller, and he likes the run.

I DISAGREE about your point that UK's mediocre running game is a point in Woodson's favor. Woodson throws it more than Brohm, because he has to. More attempts equal more chances for TD's. Even with Brian's disappointing year, they have a nearly identical completion percentage. And Andre has been helped by a genuine gamebreaker of a WR (Keenan Burton.) I think Louisville has good WRs, in an undersized player like Douglas who's shifty and a very good route runner and a giant like Urrutia, but I'd take Keenan 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. Urrutia isn't very good off the line and still pretty raw on the little things. He's just tall and strong. And Douglas is limited physically. The best total package WR in this state is Burton.

I think it's clear Woodson's had the better season statistically. No one is arguing that. I would argue as to how much those statistics mean. In this case, not as much because all things are not equal, between Brohm's injuries and the TD production of Louisville's running game.

But your final clause makes no sense to your argument- even with fewer attempts, Brohm has had as many wins as Woodson and a quarter of the losses. Isn't that a better season per your admitted ultimate standard?

You obviously have not read a single post I've made in this thread. My argument is simply that Woodson's had the better statistical year than Brohm. I think Brohm is the better College QB, and obviously had more wins. I can't recall many UL fan's admitting that Woodson has had the better statistical year, most want to argue about the validity of the stats.

Maybe you need to read the thread more carefully then...;)

Obviously not...But career numbers do. ;)

Let's compare and see how many miles ahead he is......

BROHM (3 seasons)

388/588 (66%) for 5488 yards 31 TD's & 11 INTs (1.9%)

WOODSON (2 seasons)

393/658 (60%) for 4711 yards 32 TD's & 14 INT's (2.1%)

Considering their supporting casts, length of play, and collegiate experience, it seems that Andre isn't that far off the pace. I know that Brohm was only a parttimer as a frosh, but he did get the opportunity to play and toss the rock that season behind Lefors.

As far as SOS, they are both in the top 25 in SOS nationally in every poll I have seen which is saying something about who both teams are playing. UL should play a tougher schedule as they are the better team and are in the BCS hunt.

It is also a chance to throw more INT's with the defense focusing on the passing game. There is only 2/100 of a percentage point difference between their interception ratios, ... for their careers. This season, Woodson is way ahead in that category.

In a debate, it is not your duty to validate the other sides points. There's nothing to be said on the 'Brohm side' about the numbers themselves- Woodson's having a better year by raw numbers. It's the application of those numbers that have some believing that Woodson is the better QB and Brohm is an overrated loser (and those have been out there, in this thread and others) that I would object to, and looking at the surrounding facts behind those numbers bears that argument out.

Those you are arguing with have NEVER referred to Brohm in such a manner. I know that I never have and never will. He is too good for anyone to make such a ridiculous claim. Anyone who makes such a statement shows their lack of understanding of the game of football and just how good a player Brohm is.

They have the same ammount of collegiate experience. In fact, as Brohm is a true Junior with time missed for his torn ACL, as opposed to Woodson being a redshirt Junior with no comparable injuries and rehab time, Woodson has a distinct advantage in that catergory. Woodson has played just as many seasons as Brohm, with none of the setbacks.

Woodson:

YEAR CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT SACK RAT 2004 54 88 492 61.4 5.59 52 2 1 14 113.56

Brohm:

YEAR CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT SACK RAT 2004 66 98 819 67.3 8.36 74 6 2 11 153.67

UK doesnt have a very good O'line and gets blitzed hard all the time. I believe Woodson has been sacked 29 times this year. Teams usually dont have to guess as much whether or not it will be run or pass against UK like the do UL. What Brohm faced in the 2nd half is what Woodson has faced all year against teams like UL, Florida, LSU, South Carolina, and Georgia.

I was never on the Debate team. My personal stance is to always try and call a "spade a spade". As for those who think Brohm is an "overrated loser", those are people who it's not worth the time to even have a discussion with.

Okay, let's refigure their entire career stats. My mistake. I did not include Andre's frosh stats. I forgot he played any as a frosh.

BROHM (3 seasons)

388/588 (66%) for 5488 yards 31 TD's (5.3%) & 11 INTs (1.9%)

WOODSON (3 seasons)

447/746 (60%) for 5203 yards 34 TD's (4.6%) & 15 INT's (2.0%)

Woodson's completion % is the same as it was before, but INT ratio went down. That means there is only 1/100 of a percentage difference in their INT ratio. I don't see there being a huge difference in their career stats. However, Brohm does have a better supporting cast and better rushing game. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Brohm and think it is terrific that we have 2 excellent QB's from the state playing in the state so well at the D1 level.

Louisville only runs the ball six more times per game than Kentucky. Just because it's a futile enterprise doesn't mean UK never rushes.

You don't have to run it that much more when so many runs end up in the end zone! ;)

But with Little back, I think the rushing game will show some improvement.

I agree that a solid run game is an advantage, and Louisville takes advantage of it by riding it into the endzone. Petrino is a creative but stubborn play caller, and he likes the run.

If my math is correct, and I'm not promising that it is, Brohm averages 27 attempts per game. Woodson averages 30. 3 attempts per game is not a great deal. Brohm throws a td every 31 attempts and Woodson throws one every 14 attempts. Statistically if Brohm and Woodson had the same number of attempts at 275, Brohm would only have 8 tds to Woodson's 20.

So who is the better QB? We could argue until both have graduated college and retired from the NFL (if they make it) and we would still be disagreeing like this. But I think by the stats, Woodson has had a better year and has meant more to his team that Brohm has.

Louisville only runs the ball six more times per game than Kentucky. Just because it's a futile enterprise doesn't mean UK never rushes.

6 more times a game is substantial. UK's running game is easier to defend than UL's. Also the short runs puts Woodson in much more 2nd and long and 3rd and long situations.
