The Rocks have scored a lot of points against the weaker teams on their schedule. Of the teams that you listed, I will concede that Harrison had a decent team. With nearly everybody returning from a regional championship team, I don't think anybody expected Rockcastle to struggle against Corbin, regardless of when the game was played. Everybody knows that the Rocks are a much better team than they were then, but what did they do in the off season to get off to such a slow start with so many starters returning?

 

For some reason, they usually seem to get off to a slow start. In 2002, a year after loosing the state finals and returning most of the starters, we lost the first game of the year to Mason Co. Then we ran the table again until we returned to the state finals in 2002. Last year we got dismantled by Danville in the first game and made it to the semi-finals. It takes awhile to get such a powerful machine going on all cylinders.

Rock had almost 600 yards of offense against Bell County the first time but were penalized over 80 yards that game as well all inside the red zone. About Central's speed, there is no one that could possibly possess more speed, besides Lexington Catholic that Rock saw in Lincoln County. After 3 huge plays in the first quarter against Lincoln County, Rock shut them down to only 24 yards in the remaining 3 quarters. Will eb a dandy, I'd say.

The Rocket coaches have a history of getting 150% from their talent and they will not be out-prepared or out-coached. If JC wins, they are at least 150% better than Rockcastle.

Matneys first 2 years werent flukes, neither is this season. Johnson Central has a new attitude... they are finally starting to realize that they can win.

Have you actually compared the two schedules? I'm not saying look at them. I mean actually do the math. The 8 in state teams that JC played were combined 36-44 or something like that. The WV team that JC played at one time was like 1-5. That's not very good either. Rock's 10 opponents were 50-50, a much better record. That's counting Bourbon Co (0-10) and PCC (1-9). Take those two teams away and the combined record is 49-31. That's a HUGE difference in schedules. You're going to say there's little difference between 36-44 and 50-50?

 

 

 

The problem is that you can't take those games away...no more than JC can change who they have played. Taking a look at some of RC's opponents this season, a lot of their schedules have not been that tough...sure their opponents records have been above average...but their oppontnts combined records are not that good. So, what does that mean? To me nothing. The game still has to be played on grass and dirt...not on paper.

 

JC has heard the strength of schedule argument all season long. But if it makes you feel better to beat that poor dead horse again by all means go ahead.

 

This is going to be a great game...one I can't wait to watch. BTW...it won't be a blowout no matter which team wins.

I can't wait to watch this game from the best seat in the house!

Let's also not act like Leslie County and Corbin are worldbeaters either, Jim. You have seen both teams play this season and I haven't. You may very well be right about the game being a low scoring affair, but this one could easily turn into a shootout if JC jumps out to an early lead.

 

I agree with you about Bell County's schedule, but JC isn't playing the Bobcats and there is very little difference in the strengths of schedule between JC and RC.

 

You're missing my point. To assume JC would roll up 50-some points on Rock just because that's what they've been doing all season is overlooking the obvious fact that JC has played no defense as tough as Rock's. And both teams still made it to the second round of the playoffs — third round in Corbin's case.

 

LC and Corbin may not be world-beaters, but I feel pretty safe in saying both have defenses better than anything JC has faced this year.

I would put Bell and Lincoln's defenses on par with JC. Corbin is just a notch behind.

 

I agree that JC will be able to move the ball, but it's going to be a lot tougher than it has at any time this season. The key, IMO, is if JC can sustain long drives. If they can do that, and keep Durham in check, they have a good chance to win. If Rock controls the LOS like it did against Bell, it will be a long night (literally and figuratively) for the JC defense.

Just for the record, adding in JC's 2 out of state teams record their opponents combined record is 46-54 while Rocks as you said is 50-50. Not that big of a difference if you ask me. The biggest difference is this game is not the strength of schedule of either team, its the playoff experience that Rockcastle possess over JC. JC will have to play a great game to beat a veteran Rock team, anyone who knows football knows that, but the SOS will not factor into this game as you seem to think.
