They Shall Not Grow Old - WW1 Documentary

Featured Replies

I have spent a lot of time on WWI in my life and I get viscerally angry when I see people not give it the respect that it deserves. Most of that, in the US anyway, is lack of knowledge and education on the subject. It was a long drawn out war of attrition where there were no heroes and no real villains.

There is no movie where you can watch it and not feel sorry for everyone involved in the hopelessness and horror of a modern war just coming into its own. Some of the most jarring and unnerving images of war in the 20th century are the weird juxtaposing of the old ways of war with the new while looking at the pockmarked moonscape that no-man's land became.

100%. I’ve argued that WW I was the worst World War of the two. The horrors of outdated tactics n modern warfare. The % of the European generation lost in that conflict. The upheaval of traditional governments after the war.

If you look at the numbers a higher percentage of combatants were actually killed in WWI than in any other war in history. The total numbers obviously slant toward WWII, but if you look at percentage killed of those who fought the numbers are way worse for WWI.

On top of that you had the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 immediately during and after the end of the war that ravaged so many. Yet we forget...

I am still horribly upset over the fact that I couldn't make it to Kansas City for the centennial of the end of the war in November. I want, so badly, to go visit the WWI museum there. It will be some years before that happens though with the twins on the way.

Going at 4:00 PM today in Florence. Should be interesting.

I've been twice. It's freaking awsome.

Going to see it today at 4:00 in Richmond. When I called the guy told me today was the only day they had it scheduled for showing. It’s puzzling why the distributors have such a limited viewing of this highly rated documentary.

I'm going to the 4:00pm showing as well, here in Louisville. I'm going with the 3D showing at AMC Stonybrook 20.

I can't see where this is playing anywhere in Cincinnati this week. Disappointing.

Well heck, it looks like they're only showing it in a couple places and only today.

See you On Demand...

Taking my wife and 10 year old son at 7pm down in Wilder.

That was absolutely incredible.

And the in-theaters-only 30 minute feature on the making of the documentary was really nice too.

Terrific documentary!!! Peter Jackson has done a great service to classrooms and the world in general with this masterpiece. It was as quite an audience that I’ve ever seen in a theater and very few even took restroom breaks. Most stayed for the post-credit part with Jackson explaining and illustrating the technology involved in making the film.

I almost thought the 30 minutes with Peter Jackson after the credits was more interesting. Amazing all the things they did for this.

They will be playing it again on 12/27

I saw it in 3D and was very impressed. With such limited footage available today, this helped paint the picture for us. Well done. Side note - modern dentistry has come a long way in the previous 100 years. :lol2:
