It has to do with the whole format. Last year playing the other district our place was full, this year playing a team we beat by 30 three weeks ago we were lucky if we had 300 at our game Friday.

Attendence also was not helped by the fact that 80 bands were in Bowlinggreen for the state band tournament this weekend.

If the format change is truly based on finances then the lower gates are only half of the equation. I would assume the KSHAA anticipated the gates being somewhat lower, but they also anticiapted saving X amount of dollars in travel expenses to offset the lower gate receipts. I need both sides of the equation before I am going to call this a bad financial decision by the KHSAA.

As far as the games go you strap'em on five times and win five times and you take the trophy home no matter who the opponents are. Yes the first round games are more boring in many cases but this format also has given some great teams chances of meeting that would not have met in the old format. Just think this year Cov Cath could meet HHS, Lex Cath, Rock or Bell or JC and then potentially BG. Last year it would have been HHS or Lex Cath, Rock or Bell or JC then BG. Cov Cath has 4 tough games instead of three. Same for Rock. They could play Bell, JC, HHS or Cov Cath or Lex Cath then BG. Last year they played Bell then Lex Cath and would have played BG. So in many cases you are going to see gate receipts in round 2 and 3 make up for round 1 for the home teams.

As gametime put it, what does the band competition have to do w/the 1st round attendance. Please don't tell me that hundreds of people come to watch your band at half time. It won't surprise me if you say yes because I have been told before that "if it wasn't for the band, there wouldn't be a football team!" Figure that one out and the mother was dead serious!

The crowd a Trinity's first round game was small. I bet a whole lot of people didn't want to sit in tha cold and watch Trinity slam a team they had easilly dispatced earlier and sadly Southern has little or no fan support.

I can see why the NKY people like the format change however. It's week tw and they still have 2 4A team in the playoffs.

Nice cheap shot, but we both know how wrong you are over the last few years. This is the 4th time in 6 years. Was the gate huge for Simon Kenton or Ryle in round 1? I know neither travel well...

I know of a lot of fans that support the football team, but have children in bands and would obviously support their children first...

The crowd at the Corbin/Garrard Co. game was better than I expected considering the blowout the previous week and the cold weather. I guess people just wanted to see some more football plus I saw kids from several other area schools there as well. There were no other games in the Tri-County area going on and only 2 other area teams even playing which probably helped as well.

We had alot of people at our game in LincolnCo......and we do have a good band.....If your team didn`t have many in attendance there could be a couple of reasons........previous commitments(such as a private party),cold weather(hurt us a little) ,overall lack of community interest, ...AND LAST BUT CERTIANLY NOT LEAST A POOR BAND?:sssh:

I would say that the #1 vs. 4 games did not draw that well, but the #2 vs. #3 games were a little bit better. I know that Highlands had girls playing in the Soccer Semi-Finals.

I did not like the format initially but did enjoy the Bethlehem vs Holy Cross re-match last week. Was fun to have an early grudge match. But now it is out of the frying pan and in to the fire as we will travel .25 miles to Bardstown for another re-match. (We had over 1200 Friday night. Not bad for two schools with enrollment of less than 300)

From what I'm reading on BGP sound like attendance wasn't very good at alot of 1st round games. We probably had 300 at the most.

Incorrect. Attendance in Lexington area games was up according to media accounts. Built in rivalries should always help attendance. If weather is good, etc. I am sure there will be actual numbers put out when they get in reports, and not just rely on one game and one short sighted observation. I happen to like the new format, even with its occasional mismatches. Ever since 4 teams began coming to the playoffs there have been some first round blowouts (and second). What happens now though is that you get statewide representation instead of the same old folks advancing. What hasn't been talked about on here is the chance for some parity. I am sure the traditional powers with somewhat of a cakewalk to the third round don't like the format. But others who haven't even sniffed the third or fourth round before probably like it a lot. I suspect, after a couple of years of trying it, it will still be about 50% approval (the new successful like it, the old successful, now not so successful, won't)

Attendance at LexCath seemed way down in the first quarter but increased steadily as the soccer fans came in and probably was up from a year ago by halftime.

Actually I have been very complimentary of the crowds brought by the NKY teams that have come to Trinity for the first round and our fans usually turn out better for those teams because they are not teams that we expect to slam. As to the "cheap shot" just calling it as I see it. The NKY people may be the only ones happy with this realignment because their playoff road got a whole lot smoother.

Again. In three of the last four years in the old format there were TWO NKY teams in round 2. They had a bad year in 03, and were swept, but answered with 3 1st round wins and two 2nd round wins in 04. Does it help the gate in NKY? No doubt. But outside of eliminating T, not much changed in reguards to how and when they advanced...
