Attendance down for the 1st round ?

Featured Replies

How many times has T had a close round 1 game with a NKY team? Is beating the snot out of someone new that big of a deal???

Sure its always fun to play somebody new. Im sure Dixie liked the match up in 2004 and wouldnt trade that win over anyone in NKY.

edit: yes I know that wasnt a first round match up.

My point has been if you have one district that is always stronger than the other and you knock each other out in the 1st two rounds you don't get the best two teams playing for the regional championship.

No you get them playing for the district championship, who cares? What makes playing the extra week such a big deal?

You started the thread under the guise that attendance was down, it's always bad in round one, and I'd like to see some numbers.

Guise or not it's still a bad ideal. It seems the only people on here in favor of it are the NKY people. Hadn't really noticed until it was pointed out. If your 4 teams are better than the other districts then you could possibly have all 4 playing again this week. With this new system the most you have left is two. So explain to me how we're ending up with the best overall teams. If you have to water it down to get parity then it really isnt' parity.

It was an absolute horrid idea by the KHSAA...how many teams were playing the same team from the prior week who they had blown out? Where as, crossing districts, and playing teams not normally faced during the regular season, would add excitement. One more item of proof that shows the KHSAA is clueless

Clueless compared to you? Looks to me like they were looking out for the rest of the state while some of you Rock fans are scared to death you might lose in the second or third round instead of playing in the finals. Let's see how it goes. In some parts of the state, they are going to play later than normal, some earlier. It's called change and get used to it. Also, what you call excitement, most school superintendents (who don't have access to donations, scholarships and financial aid) call expensive and asked for relief. It just depends on what green or rose colored glasses you choose to wear. And at least next year they gave us two weeks (10 and 11) not to play district games so that this kind of thing won't happen. I can only assume, but without the burden of game contracts (which kept them from doing it this year), looks like this is the only year the instant rematch can happen. To me, it wasn't exactly clueless, but in a couple of years of looking at it, I may agree with you, or .. you may agree with me.

Attendance at LexCath seemed way down in the first quarter but increased steadily as the soccer fans came in and probably was up from a year ago by halftime.

Just more proof that despite the opinions of some, there are a lot of options for fans today. And playing these rivalry games (built in rivalries due to in district play) MAY just be the thing to make people come late when they didn't come at the start.

At the Paris-Raceland game, Paris had more fans show up this go-round, the Raceland side didn't look as full as you would expect.

Ashland/Mason Co. crowd was way down.

Maybe the cold weather but I thought it was one of the smallest crowds I have ever seen at Putnam Stadium.

Crowds were down due to the new format...why would anyone want to see a rematch (back to back weeks in some cases) of a 1 vs. 4 blowout from the previous meeting. This whole playing the same team twice is a joke anyway...unless of course a team from your own district wins out and you meet them in subsequent rounds of the playoffs per the old system.

My initial feeling was that the Male/PRP game would have brought a ton of PRP fans to see a rematch with the starting QB back. I was very surprised to see only about 80 people there for PRP. Male had a decent showing but not what I would call a great showing.

Im sure there are many reasons for the low attendance, but my first thought was that most 3 & 4 seed teams would have larger crowds simply for "rematch" with District powerhouses. I was wrong, apparently.

I dont know what the reasons are except to say that I think there is some interest lost from the fans when you are playing someone you already played just a few weeks before (or even the week before).

Im sure the 2nd round involving Male & X will bring some good numbers but for some reason, I just have a feeling that many fans are just waiting to see how far their teams go before they decide to venture out in the cold weather.

I also ask this: How bad will attendance be next year when a potential 10-0 team takes on an 0-10 team because the 0-10 team only had 4 teams in the district and qualified automatically???

My vote: Eliminate the 3 & 4 seeds and establish "Bowl" games for bowl eligible teams, let them play an 11th game and then call it a season. Meanwhile...let the 1 & 2 seeds battle it out against each other in the "playoffs". Im sure a 6-4 team would much rather play another 6-4 team for a bowl trophy then get saddled against a team that is 10-0 and will probably blast them 64-0 in the 1st round. (OOOPS....lest we forget Lafayette's early exit....maybe the current system isnt so bad once in a while)

Why not just say 6-4 is just not good enough, go start basketball season???

Henderson Co played to a half empty stadium & the first round opponent was Apollo, who we played 3 weeks ago. This week were at Owensboro to play Senior, who we played 2 weeks ago. Im sure the cold didn't help either, but i agree with you!

I mentioned this in another thread about a week or so ago... if they had used last year's playoff format with this year's alignment, it would have made for some good first and second round matchups, but probably some devilish travel times and expenses for the NKY and Central Kentucky 4A schools.

If only...

#4 Campbell County (7-3) at #1 John Hardin (6-3)

#3 Meade County (5-5) at #2 Ryle (8-2)

#3 Dixie Heights (5-5) at #2 North Hardin (6-4)

#4 Nelson County (3-7) at #1 Boone County (6-4)

#4 Southern (5-5) at #1 Lou. Male (9-0)

#3 Manual (6-4) at #2 Ballard (6-4)

#3 Seneca (5-5) at #2 Lou. St. Xavier (8-2)

#4 Pleasure Ridge Park (7-3) at #1 Lou. Trinity (9-1)

In the Louisville playoff, I think every game except probably Southern at Male would have had big tunouts. And the second round possibility of Male-Manual and Trinity-St. Xavier would have been fantastic.
