NBA announced that select players coming out of high school will be offered a $125K one year contract to play in the G League. Players will only have one year on this deal and will be draft eligible after one season. Players would also be able to sign with an agent and take endorsement deals immediately. Questions are how many players will take this path instead of college? What happens to the guys that are a bust that first year in the G League? How many players will commit to college and sign LOI only to back out at the last minute? Hopefully there will be a decision window of 3 or 4 weeks in the spring that players will have to commit to the G League or not. Of course this is just a four year bandaid until next collective bargaining agreement kills one and done in 3 or 4 years.

Voice of Reason Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 I think it will attract top players and it isn't the $125,000. The ability to get shoe deals and endorsements will do it. I can see the shoe company money drying up for the illicit college deals and shoe companies offering big clean bucks for players to go to the G league.

A few 5 star types a year will jump, but for most it will be strongly advised against by anyone giving advice that has a clue. Riding a bus to Ft Wayne and Sioux Falls to get exposed nightly by 25 year olds trying to provide for their families is a sure fire way to leave millions on the table when you could go to college and dominate 20 year olds on ESPN as you move up the draft boards. Kids with bad support systems will get burned thought. Yay...

I think one unintended consequence will be a bunch of kids not worrying about high school academics, as they all think they can just go to G League.

Irish Cat Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 Considering that more than likely it is the shoe companies that are paying the players and not the universities, wouldn't they prefer to keep the kids in college as opposed to the G-League. Doesn't it do Nike more good to Zion Williamson play on national TV every night for Duke or UK, than for him to play in front of nobody for the Maine Red Claws. Surly for the shoe companies it is just about exposure at that point in a players career.

Not to mention that kids these days are all about their social media, follows, likes, retweets, etc. How much of that is from fanbases of certain colleges trying to encourage a kid to pick that particular school. If it is know that a top recruit is bypassing college for the G-League my bet is a lot of that goes away. I'd guess most people are like me, but the only reason I pay attention to things like the McDonalds All American Game is to get a look at kids that will be at UK next year. If none of those kids go to college than i won't watch the game or give it any thought.
