I think I've done a poor job representing my interest and concern over the issue. I don't care that much, nor am I insulted, but I did read the question as an attempt to reveal that the most important college football game in the state of KY, is less important than a UK scrimmage.

 

A more approriate term than "insulting and baiting" should have been used to express that I thought the question had negative overtone, yet not that I was actually insulted.

 

To be honest now that I look at the question again, I'm not sure the negative connotations of the question aren't directed at the famous "18%" more so than to expose the lack of interest in Louisville football.

As to the bolded part, to a large portion of UK fans, it is exactly that. But I'm not sure exactly why that would surprise anyone. It is interesting topic, to say the least. I just fail to see the negativity in asking the quesiton.

I don't see any negativity at all. In fact, it doesn't reflect on U of L at all. If a person would rather watch a basketball scrimmage than participate in (or even watch) the excitement of a university and city in their home state have so much success and get to play in such a huge game on national tv, more power to them. I figure it's their loss.

ESPN is expecting it to be the most viewed Thursday night game in their history with over 6.5 million viewers...

I disagree with pretty much all of this post for a couple reasons...

 

1) I love UK basketball, and anyone who knows me personally knows I am a huge sports fan period. If UK is playing, regardless of the type of game, I watch. I could care less what else is on. If tO$U/UM game were at the same type as a UK game, I would watch the UK game every time. Does that mean I'm not a big Wolverine fan, or that I'm not a true sports fan? Hardly. It means I like college basketball more than college football, and that I like UK more than any other team, and I will support them 100%.

 

2) I don't like UofL athletics period. It's like your dislike for UK. There's just something about their teams that I can't stand. I would rather watch a team I love, than a team I don't like. It's the same thing with basketball. I would rather watch Michigan play Temple than two undefeated teams, say Duke/UNC play in college basketball. I don't like those teams, and if given a choice would rather watch the team I cheer for play.

If I had the resources to do a statewide study before last college hoops season, I would ask a couple of key questions. First would be, "Are you a UK fan?" I would probably get an 80 percent confirmation rate on that one.

 

My follow-up question would be:

"How far will Maurice Ager and Paul Davis lead their team this year."

 

I would bet 70 percent of my respondents would say either "I don't follow the NBA," or "Who?"

I don't know if I fully agree....I have said numerous times I can't stand UK basketball fans, other than myself of course, however I think it really comes down to the whole 18% thing.

Is there anything wrong with that. It is what makes UK basketball special. It captures the interest of a great majority of the state who otherwise might not be interested at all.

 

Lets face it for a lot of people UK basketball was an escape from reality. Especially back in the Rupp days a lot of the fan base were poor rural folks who probably didn't enjoy a lot of luxuries, but they could live vicariously through the voice of Cawood as royalty of college basketball. Its a tradition based down through generations. UK basketball gave people something of which to be proud, when they otherwise might not have had much.

And that doesn't mean anything. I know lots of people that love UK basketball, and watch every game on ESPN religiously. They couldn't name more than 25 players nationwide outside of UK though. Does that mean they aren't college basketball fans? No, it just means they watch the games for their enjoyment.

I see your point, my point was that I choose to go to the UK game and I watched every single minute of the 40 point win by UK tonight and I enjoyed completely. So does that mean though by what you said in your first post that I am not a true sports fan in general since I choose to go to a UK exhibition game, instead of staying at home to watch a football game on tv of two teams that I really dont have to much interest in...I know when I got home I immediately turned on the football game, but since I choose to watch the UK game instead at first, according to what you were saying in your post that means that I am not a true sports fan which is not true at all and that is what I was trying to say.

 

Yeah you will find that there are some fans that just know about UK and dont know about anything else. But the majority of UK fans IMO are true sports fans, but they just like me love their team so much that they would rather watch them play instead of two other teams...
