What could have been ... good first-round matchups

Featured Replies

The Lexington 4A district playoffs would have looked like this:

Madison Central @ Lafayette (1)

Montgomery County @ Henry Clay (2)

(3) Scott County @ GRC

(4) Woodford County @ Lincoln County

So if I am in GRC, Lincoln, Madison Central or Montgomery, I love the new format. As with all changes, there are winners and losers. This way, that district can stay around a while instead of getting elmiinated in the first round.

We can pick apart the new format, but the bottom line is, it's never the same every year. Some districts are stronger in some years and weaker than others. Class 2A Region 1, District 2 (OCath, Glasgow, Monroe) has been among the strongest in 2A in recent years but is waaaay down this year. District 1 (Fort Campbell, Caldwell) hasn't fared well against them in recent years but would have had a shot at a sweep this year.

Class A, District 2 is normally strong but is slightly down this year.

The strength arguement for a certain district isn't one you can make every single year.

No, but I think what he's trying to say is...by mixing one district with another from the 1st round on (vs. the 3rd round now), the odds of the two best teams in a Region surviving to meet in the 3rd round game increase.

And it makes pretty good sense if a given region typically has one strong and one weak district.

In the bigger picture, though...I don't think any of this matters too much. If the goal is to win the State Title, you have to go through the best teams to get there, anyway. The difference now, you'll have to beat those "best" teams on different Fridays than before.

:bunny:

I watched Corbin vs. Rock... ;)

The bottom line is exactly what you said.. on the year Corbin has lost 5 times and of their 5 wins only one has came against a respectable opponent... I just feel that if you take District 8 for example... I feel Belfry and SC definately would beat Corbin and Pburg and the Hounds are very comparable.

Corbin gets a free pass to the 3rd round whereas one of those 3 teams just mentioned goes home after round 1!

I hope they do give Russell a game..the Devils need one. It's just of the 4 2A games going on that night, more than likely the Corbin vs. Russell will easily be the most outmatched on paper.

Is Russell really that much better than Rockcastle, Bell Co. and Middlesboro?

Sheldon Clark and Belfry are both top 10 teams this year and Prestonsburg is also good, so the change in the playoff format is not good for them since all 3 could have advanced to the 2nd round under the previous format and 2 of the 3 may have ended up in the regional final game. The other district teams in the old region are probably the ones who lucked out in this new format.

I for one don't like the new format at all. I would prefer Corbin to have to beat E-town and Larue to advance to the regional final as opposed to Garrard Co. and Wayne Co.

No.

I think they are a couple TD better than Middlesboro, who was the last team to beat Corbin, and who won by 20... and they are at least 3-4 TD better than Wayne Co. who the Redhounds beat by 9 points, and 5-6 TD better than Casey County who Corbin defeated by 16.

I'm not much into score comparisons, but here are some to ponder.

Ashland beat Russell 24-21

Raceland beat Ashland 21-16

LCA beat Raceland 21-10

Corbin beat LCA 20-7

IMO everybody justs needs to get over it. It is what it is. you win 5 games your state champs; you lose one your out. You are always going to have teams with easier roads than others. Whether you agree with the format or not it is here and I am sure the KSHAA did not look at each team and pick this format to give one team an easier road than the other. It really only changes the first round matchups in many cases anyway.

It is obvious by this thread that people just hate change. You have one group complaining that they hate the playoffs because of boring games against weak district teams that they have already blown out. So they don't like it because they feel they are playing weak competion for a second time. Then you have the other side complaining that they are having to play a third or fourth seed in their district that has only one loss just like they do. So they are complaining that they are having to play to many high ranked teams to get to the state championship.

And guess what it all changes again next year. I just can't wait to read this same thread next year...

4chs I think his answer to your question was "No" they are not better than Rock or Bell since he didn't mention them in his reply.:D :D :D

I don't understand what is wrong with coming out of your own district first. This is great for NKY AAAA. It is going to create large gates between local rivals.

Is that the new buzzword to just issue a blanket dismissal of those that don't like the playoff system?

I'm all for change if it's also an improvement. This, in my opinion, is not ... and most of the football people I talk to are in agreement.

Bottom line ... we've seen all these matchups before. We had rematches under the old system, but at least teams had to earn their way there.

I think that the CURRENT Russell team is considerably better than the CURRENT Bell County and equal or not as good as the CURRENT Rock team.

Corbin's 2-0 loss to Rockcastle came very early in the season before Rock established their current offensive prowess. Since that game I feel that Corbin has not improved very much, especially not comparable to the improvement in Rockcastle. The evidence of this is the fact that the Redhounds were far from convincing in most of their games and they continued to lose football games to Oldham, South Laurel, Middlesboro, and Bell County.

I can't think of any team in the top 5 of 2A that would have lost at any point in the season to South Laurel.. in fact Mercer County beat them by a score of 53-6 the week before the Corbin game.

I think it's funny that he asked if I thought Russell was better than Bell, Middlesboro, and Rock..but left off Oldham and South Laurel.

Do I feel Corbin can play with Russell? Sure.. the Hounds have a great tradition and some excellent young talent. But,,, the Corbin who has struggled down the stretch with Wayne County and Casey County has no shot.

I think Rockcastle and Bell are a little overrated, anyway ... near the bottom of the top 10 in 3A. Or, in Bell's case, if in it at all.

Granted, it's hard to tell about Russell because of their schedule. But I don't think you can necessarily compare the Ashland-Russell game to the Ashland-Raceland game ... Ashland made some personnel changes after the loss to Raceland that appeared to improve the team.

I did not ask about South Laurel and Oldham because I already knew the answer to that question...........Russell is better than either one, although I think that Oldham could stay in the game with Russell.

Corbin has struggled at times and if they play the way they have against Casey, Wayne, Oldham, Middlesboro or South Laurel, they basically have no shot at beating a team as good as Russell.

How good of a passing attack does Russell have? The common thread in most of the games that Corbin has struggled in have been big plays made against the defense by the opposing teams passing game.

I think Rockcastle and Bell are a little overrated, anyway ... near the bottom of the top 10 in 3A. Or, in Bell's case, if in it at all.

The Bell fans will get mad at me over this, but I think that this year's Bell Co. team is their weakest team in years.

Great post!!

I totally agree and am all for change. But instead of making a change to better the playoff format, football takes a step backwards with this.

I know GT you said you would rather see the NKy matchups this week rather than the NKy 4-A matched against the Eastern Jefferson county teams. I believe you said better attendance (which is likely true in this case). But in most cases around the state you are not going to get a huge crowd of fans to come and watch a team that was just blown out by the same team (sometimes just last week) and you know it will happen again.

Take Male-PRP in Louisville. PRP does have a lot of fan support. But after losing 59-0 a few weeks back, why as a casual fan would I go watch what I know is going to be the same result? I would be willing to bet if there was any way to take attendance from every game across the state this year and compare to last year (no way possible) it would be down 30-40 percent.

The KHSAA has made a lot of really, really bad decisions over the years. We could line them all up, but this is one of the worst decisions they have ever come up with. And I know a lot of coaches that agree with me! You don't screw with something that isn't broken.
