What could have been ... good first-round matchups

Featured Replies

I did not ask about South Laurel and Oldham because I already knew the answer to that question...........Russell is better than either one, although I think that Oldham could stay in the game with Russell.

Corbin has struggled at times and if they play the way they have against Casey, Wayne, Oldham, Middlesboro or South Laurel, they basically have no shot at beating a team as good as Russell.

How good of a passing attack does Russell have? The common thread in most of the games that Corbin has struggled in have been big plays made against the defense by the opposing teams passing game.

I am a Belfry fan but do know that Russell's QB Jones has passed for nearly 1000 yards this year and has been a very viable option running the ball. As with every Russell team of the past their forte' is run til you stop us.

Is that the new buzzword to just issue a blanket dismissal of those that don't like the playoff system?

I'm all for change if it's also an improvement. This, in my opinion, is not ... and most of the football people I talk to are in agreement.

Bottom line ... we've seen all these matchups before. We had rematches under the old system, but at least teams had to earn their way there.

You missed the whole point of the comment. The point was people who have an easier rode want a harder road and people who have the harder road want an easier road. It was a joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't get so uptight.

I think that the CURRENT Russell team is considerably better than the CURRENT Bell County and equal or not as good as the CURRENT Rock team.

Corbin's 2-0 loss to Rockcastle came very early in the season before Rock established their current offensive prowess. Since that game I feel that Corbin has not improved very much, especially not comparable to the improvement in Rockcastle. The evidence of this is the fact that the Redhounds were far from convincing in most of their games and they continued to lose football games to Oldham, South Laurel, Middlesboro, and Bell County.

I can't think of any team in the top 5 of 2A that would have lost at any point in the season to South Laurel.. in fact Mercer County beat them by a score of 53-6 the week before the Corbin game.

I think it's funny that he asked if I thought Russell was better than Bell, Middlesboro, and Rock..but left off Oldham and South Laurel.

Do I feel Corbin can play with Russell? Sure.. the Hounds have a great tradition and some excellent young talent. But,,, the Corbin who has struggled down the stretch with Wayne County and Casey County has no shot.

I was just teasing because he ask about Middlesboro, Bell and the Rock and you addressed one and left the other 2 out of your response. I was just having a little fun.:thumb:

The KHSAA has made a lot of really, really bad decisions over the years. We could line them all up, but this is one of the worst decisions they have ever come up with. And I know a lot of coaches that agree with me! You don't screw with something that isn't broken.

I suppose this was done to more easily facilitate the random selection of regional final matchups. I guess they knew that if the NKY 4A district would pair with the district to the south and west of Louisville, some of the traveling would be unreal. But, just for fun, what if they used this year's alignment with last year's system?

#4 Campbell County (7-3) at #1 John Hardin (6-3)

#3 Meade County (5-5) at #2 Ryle (8-2)

#3 Dixie Heights (5-5) at #2 North Hardin (6-4)

#4 Nelson County (3-7) at #1 Boone County (6-4)

#4 Southern (5-5) at #1 Lou. Male (9-0)

#3 Manual (6-4) at #2 Ballard (6-4)

#3 Seneca (5-5) at #2 Lou. St. Xavier (8-2)

#4 Pleasure Ridge Park (7-3) at #1 Lou. Trinity (9-1)

I bet the Manual-Ballard matchup would be great. It would also set up the possibility of Trinity vs. St. X and Male vs. Manual on the same night in the second round.

Oh well... just for fun.

I think Rockcastle and Bell are a little overrated, anyway ... near the bottom of the top 10 in 3A. Or, in Bell's case, if in it at all.

Granted, it's hard to tell about Russell because of their schedule. But I don't think you can necessarily compare the Ashland-Russell game to the Ashland-Raceland game ... Ashland made some personnel changes after the loss to Raceland that appeared to improve the team.

How do you figure this one. Rock's only loss is to a very good 4a team in Lincoln Co in a very close game. They have the 1st or second rush defense in all of 3A. They have one of the top 3 RB's in 3A Who are going to move ahead of them. Again have you seen them play?????

It sure doesn't read like a joke, and it seemed to echo another post or two that mentioned people hating change.

I realize that it was the first game of the year, but Rockcastle only beat Corbin 2-0, and Corbin isn't a top-10 team in 2A. They also barely beat Bell, which doesn't seem to be quite as good as usual ... and apparently I'm not the only one that feels that way. Lincoln isn't a bad team, but they were thumped by a Pleasure Ridge Park team that finished fourth in their district, and Lincoln won arguably the state's weakest 4A district.

Rockcastle's stats are fine, but they haven't exactly played the toughest schedule, either.

Thats why I wrote the 2 bold statements to show both sides of the argument. But if you want to be serious about it, I have been in sales for almost 20 years and the fact is people do hate change.

I'll ask again who are you going to put above them?

If you meant it as a joke, a ;) might have made it clear.

Again? When did you ask me before?

MY 3A top 8 would look like this:

1. Bowling Green

2. Covington Catholic

3. Highlands

4. Lexington Catholic

5. Johnson Central

6. Franklin County

7. Central

8. East Jessamine

Rockcastle would be, at best, in the #9 slot ...

I'll take Manual @ St X and NCC @ Holy Cross over the games you listed for NCC and Manual. Plus I'll take a Dixie/Ryle and Boone/Campbell rematch over matching up with the Hardins, Meade and Nelson...

Oh yes gametime I would hat to see your northern Ky teams have to play the lesser state teams.

And where did I say that? Nice try...

I tried to ask here but left the question mark off. Guess I was in a hurry.;) ;)
