BluegrassPreps Class 3A Football Rankings (9/3) Discussion

Class 3A

Though the season is only three weeks old we have our first notable common opponent. Class 2A Danville took on Corbin and Boyle County in successive weeks, and the results would suggest that 3A may be more of a dogfight than many expected. Both teams will continue to navigate tough non-district slates as Boyle travels to play 4A Wayne County and 1A's champion, Beechwood, comes calling on the Hounds. Belfry got off the mat for the first win and now look for a statement against 2A Newport Central Catholic. Central has looked very good. They have a chance to improve their ranking against a Ballard team that Boyle County had to fight to put away in the opener.

1. Boyle County at 4A #7 Wayne County

2. Central at 6A #10 Ballard

3. Corbin vs. 1A #1 Beechwood

4. Belfry vs. 2A #8 Newport Central Catholic

5. Lexington Catholic vs. 2A Lexington Christian

6. Casey County -- OPEN

7. Elizabethtown vs. 2A #3 Christian Academy of Louisville

8. Caldwell County vs. 1A #7 Crittenden County

9. Bell County -- OPEN

10. Paducah Tilghman vs. 5A Graves County

I agree with your assessment 100%. The road to Kroger Field will get bloody in 3A. While I think Boyle is an excellent team, they have shown some defensive vulnerability. I think Central is better than advertised. I think Corbin is an offensive juggernaut, but defensively, like Boyle, has been suspect. And Belfry is Belfry, always a tough out.

To me, I think Lex Cath is the biggest surprise. They appear to have it working well on both sides of the ball.

The 6-10 spot are 'to be determined'. It is basically the same old song and dance. No disrespect to those teams. It is good to see Paducah Tilghman in the mix.

I still feel Boyle is the prohibitive favorite....with Central and maybe Corbin a close 2nd/3rd. Belfry is a work in progress. Going to be an interesting season without a doubt

I like the top 5 but I think Paducah Tilghman should be higher than 10th. 3A once again will be a very competitive and entertaining class to watch this year.

The problem with Tilghman is their win over McCracken isn't nearly as good as it would have been in previous years and the team from Tennessee wasn't nearly as good as some posters wanted us to believe (they were 1-9 last year). The Mayfield loss kinda looked like the same old Tilghman. I too agree that they are better but we might have to wait and see over these next three games.

Same. The negative for Boyle is that if all goes as planned in the regular season they'd likely have to win playoff games on the road at Belfry and at Corbin. If Boyle makes it to Lexington they will have absolutely earned it.

Boyle should really be #5 at this point.

Defending champions, winners of sixteen straight games, victories over top ten teams in 6A, 4A, and 2A should be ranked fifth? Wow.

Curious. When did Belfry play any of those teams?

Boyle has played in three games one was a blow out and they beat danville by a comparable score of the Corbin danville game. I don’t see any logic in your post at all because you say that last year doesn’t matter and neither does paper scores which until Corbin plays boyle or central plays them or however you want to slice it the reigning champ is champ til they lose.

You would.

Last years games dont mean anything for 2018. They have struggled against 3 teams this year. Central, Corbin, Belfry all beat them. Lex Cath is the only one that is a maybe toss up, but if they played this week, I think Cath wins.

Lexington Catholic hasn’t played team this season that says they should be any higher than 5th.

I'd have a hard time picking against Central against any of these teams right now, but you could probably flip a coin for 1-4 and not be wrong.

Yep. To me, Central is the only team that has an argument for number one over Boyle.

I’ve watched Boyle very close the first 3 games and I can’t say they look like the #1 team in 3A. Granted out of the top 5 the only other team I’ve seen is Lex Cath (thanks prepspin). Catholic has looked pretty good especially offensively. I get why Boyle continues to be #1 but right now the Rebels are struggling to find a consistent ground game and the secondary has had 3 shaky 1st halves. To contrast that The Rebels are pretty efficient through the air and their 2nd half D has been nothing short of amazing. By December I can see Boyle peaking and being #1 but at this very moment they probably aren’t the best team in the class. Rebel Nation knew coming into the season that it would take time for the OL to get it together and that has been the case so far. 3A is going to be a fun one to follow this year. Especially in November!
