September 2, 20188 yr Chip had a quick hook for Wilton Speight. Should have just went with DTR anyways. DTR is exactly the type of QB Chip had at Oregon. Speight got hurt, which is why he came out. Outside of the one long run, the UCLA offense did nothing with DTR at the helm. Speight was clearly the best chance for them to win last night, but long term he's not the answer for a Chip Kelly offense...
September 2, 20188 yr Honestly, I thought he played both of those just right. The first one was what, less than a yard? If you can't get that distance (especially when you've been running the way they had in that game), then you don't deserve to win. As to the second one, when it was fourth and goal from the 3 or 4...he sent the FG unit out. It wasn't until the defensive penalty put the ball inside the two that he went for it. Too much "reward" for the risk...get a TD and put the game out of reach...heck, even if they turn it over on downs, you're going to have the UCLA QB setting up in his own end zone to start, and they'd still have to go close to 70 yards to be in FG range. Granted, hindsight is always 20/20, but I think he played those two instances perfectly. The first one was 4th and 2 from the 12 and Warren ran for 3 to pick it up...

September 2, 20188 yr I think UC found a QB Ridder is going to be a good one. Feel bad for Hayden but he simply doesn't handle pressure very well. Smart move by the staff to make the switch early, especially considering the off season that Des had.

It was scripted that Moore would get the first two series and Ridder the next two unless Hayden got hot right away. Des played well in the 2nd quarter, but on the whole he still has a lot to improve...

They are the kind of decisions that coaches have to make and are then crushed if they don't work. I imagine Chip Kelly is being roasted in LA today for going for it when he did.

Maybe they marked the runner down further back than where I saw him end up.

Most important stat of the night in those two situations for me is that Warren carried 35 times and was only tackled for a loss once with that loss being 1 yard. UC dominated UCLA at the point of attack in the run game and Fickell knew it...
September 3, 20188 yr Wow. This is a great start. Sure, UCLA is in a transition year, for a team like UC to get a win at the Rose Bowl gives them tons of momentum. Still iffy on the QB situation. Not a fan of Moore, but Ridder didn’t exactly impress me either. Big game against Miami next week.

I was so hoping that after the fumble, new QB coach Gino Guidugli refused to live through the “same old, same old” and yanked him. THAT would have sent a message to the whole team. Outside of the defensive ejection and the one long run, D was much improved. (Thanks Coach Stripling!) Go Cats!
