If I was a coach in the NFL, the quarterback that I would want the most that is currently playing is Tom Brady. Therefore, I don't think that Payton fits the bill as the best ever.

I dont think Manning deserves the best ever distinction by any means. But to place all the blame on Peyton Manning as a choker for all his team's playoff losses is simply being close-minded and not examining the whole situation properly.

I totally agree, I just like Tom Brady as being the most clutch quarterback currently playing in the NFL. I can't see Payton going his whole career without wining a super bowl.

He's not as far as some may think.

The thing is, he has a pattern of not winning big games, despite consistently playing for teams that are in the upper echelon. Tennessee, in college...never won anything while he was there, and then won a national title the very year he left, with Tee Martin at QB. TEE MARTIN!

 

Now, in the NFL, his career is going about the same. The Colts are consistently one of the best teams in the league, yet they always lose in the playoffs. And, in those losses, we've seen some un-Peyton Manning-like performances. So, until he proves that he can lead his team to a championship, or, at the least, a Super Bowl...I can't see even considering him as the greatest ever.

 

But, just for the record, whether he wins a Super Bowl or not this year or next, I'd still take Tom Brady. Peyton winning the big game isn't going to change my opinion on that.

I just don't see Manning being seriously considered the best quarterback ever. I think he's a sure fire first ballot hall of famer and he may very well own most of the records before he is done but statistics don't make you the best ever. By the same token though neither do Super Bowl titles, Manning has come up short in the playoffs--sometimes his fault, sometimes not. To me when rating quarterbacks how they lead their team and manage the game are just as important as passing yards and touchdowns. Manning is an excellent game manager with great accuracy and arm strength. He has also been blessed to have had the best collection of skill position talent in the league for most of his career. I guess the best way for me to sum it up is simply this: are the Colts fans or even just casual observers shocked anymore when the Colts lose short of the Super Bowl and Manning throws a big interception at some point? I would say most people are not suprised at all. How shocked were Patriot fans and casual observers when Brady had the ball and a chance to beat the Broncos last year and threw an interception. Everyone was expecting him to lead them down the field and win the game. Until Manning can instill that same feeling of "oh no we left him 45 seconds to beat us" in a big game like Brady does I don't think he can be considered the best quarterback in the AFC--let alone of all time.

I think if manning wins a superbowl he might be the best ever! If not the best close to the best.

He is not even the best commercial maker.He does take the top spot for his commercials being aired the most,and I am getting tired of seeing them on Sunday over and over and over again.

During his first Super Bowl season, he survived a QB controversy with local hero Drew Bledsoe and the loss of his only deep threat (Terry Glenn). Two summers ago, his offensive coordinator fled for Notre Dame and the team didn't even bother spending money to replace him. This season, they lowballed his top two receivers, pushed them out the door, then expected Brady to break in a new group of guys as the season was going on. And the guy just keeps winning. Out of all the must-win games over the years, he came up short only in Denver last January.

 

And obviously, I'm horribly biased on this subject. But after everything that's happened since 2001, for the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would ...

Manning isn't close too the best of all time. You have got to show that you can win the big games before you even get invited to the discussion. Manning isn't even close to winning the big games and he has had great supporting casts.

If they go undefeated and win the Super Bowl this year will this conversation change on a dime?
