Is Peyton Manning possibly the best ever?

If they go undefeated and win the Super Bowl this year will this conversation change on a dime?

In theory, it has to...

At this point I would rather have Brady than Manning, The 3 rings is pretty impressive.

It would at least legitimize Manning being in the discussion. But, it wouldn't change my opinion. I'd still rather have Tom Brady, Super Bowl or not this year from Peyton.

And, I'd still, at the least, keep Joe Montana and John Elway ahead of them both.

It's hard to make an argument for him as the hands down best ever when he wasn't won a Super Bowl.

As far as his vision and composure goes, though, he's definitely extremely high on the list... And if/when he wins the big game, it'll be a lot easier to call him #1.

That is a team accomplishment rather than his ability. No way he can control how horrible the Colts defense is/has been.

Put him on the Broncos and they are in the Super Bowl.

Put him on the Bears and they are in the Super Bowl.

Put him on a team with a decent offense (he would raise it to a higher level) and a strong defense and he wins the title.

Up till his last two seasons, the same thing was being said about Elway that is being said about Peyton.

Peyton plays for a guy just like Marvin. Where is the heat on Dungy???

I would assume in Indy where the Colts are located. This is a Bengal town. If the Colts go 15-1 or 1-15, I really don't care. (the one loss is a certain game against a certain feline mascotted team.:D )

I'm simply responding to your thoughts on the topic. Skate around it if you like...

Not skating around something that I don't really care about.

Most definitely Dungy has to carry blame for the poor Indy defense. I just personally don't care and hope their defense stays as porous as it is so that it betters the Bengals chances.

I guess everyone has their opinion on who is the best... My is he is the best playing right now but not the best ever.

It gets him invited to the discussion.

The thing about Elway is that when he took Denver to 3 Super Bowls, to say he didn't have the greatest supporting cast would be an understatement. Then, when he finally was surrounded by elite talent, he won two in a row, even when he was past his prime. And the Broncos were dominant. The second Super Bowl wasn't even a question of if, but how bad would they beat the NFC rep.

Peyton, on the other hand, has been surrounded by premier talent for much of his career. And, for those who like to keep bringing up defense, the Colts D was top 5 last year. A closer look at last year will show you that Peyton had Edgerrin James, one of the elite backs to ever play in the NFL, Marvin Harrison, who may end up the second best receiver to ever play behind Jerry Rice, a #2 guy in Reggie Wayne who would be a #1 for 75% of the NFL, a great O-line, and a great defense...

...and they lost in their first playoff game. They were lucky to even have a chance in that game because Pittsburgh dominated.

The fact is, people blame the defense every year, but it's often Peyton and company that come up short in the big games...they put up a combined 17 points in consecutive playoff losses to New England, and then played well below their normal level against Pitt last year. You can't blame that on the defense...can you???

I bet if you gave Elway the same supporting cast, he would at least find a way to get the offense going.

The cream rises to the top...and Peyton is still stuck in the middle.

Funny story. When they won it all, Elway had his role reduced...

...and his role was reduced because they finally had a supporting cast. Elway only did what he had to during his career. And, until TD came along, what he had to do was carry the Broncos on his back.

You can't say that about Peyton Manning. Peyton has great talent around him...he doesn't have to carry his team. Thankfully, because it's not likely that he could.

Manning isn't close too the best of all time. You have got to show that you can win the big games before you even get invited to the discussion. Manning isn't even close to winning the big games and he has had great supporting casts.

Marino didn't win the big one...and he is certainly one of the best ever....

The Colts will get it done and Peyton will forever be linked to the hardest answered question in pro football.
