Covington Holy Cross High School Valedictorian Speech

Featured Replies

There was not one.

The openly gay student had his speech pulled from the program the morning of the ceremony because the diocese felt it was too angry and personal. His message was telling the students to use their voice and stand up for their beliefs.

The bishop did not show up for the graduation. The student gave his speech thru a megaphone after the ceremony outside of the building.

Wow. Would like to read a copy of it.

You can read a copy of it by clicking on the google doc link at the end of the article. It seemed perfectly fine to me.

Well...that was much ado about nothing.

Nice speech encouraging kids to remain vigilant in the world.

I am not catholic, so I am not sure what was wrong with it. I read it. It is a private school, they can do as they wish.

Based on the original comment by the Diocese I fully expected something that went against Catholic teaching. I didn't see that in the posted speech. Odd.

Have to admit that I’m surprised that the local pope did not show up for Holy Cross’s commencement ceremony.

While I don't see anything agressive, angry, or confrontational in the speech, I do see it not exactly appropriate for a graduation ceremony. Parts of it would be ok but not all of it. More of a speech that would be at a rally or protest somewhere. JMO

I read the speech and do not see the issue - i find it positive and empowering. I think the issue could be the reference to “the young people will win” which is associated with gun control activism which is (unfortunately) viewed as a political.

I’ve been following David Hogg for several months. He is one of the Stoneman Douglas High School (FL) student gun control activists since the school shooting on Feb 14. He uses the tag line “the young people will win” - I have to say his work/efforts and results over the last few months are fascinating.

The speech by the student body president was also banned. Odd.

Op-Ed: My Speech Was Also Cut from Holy Cross Graduation | The River City News

While I didn't see much wrong with the valedictorians speech, I found nothing wrong with this speech. Only thing I can think of is that they didn’t let her deliver due to not allowing the other or the fact that both were sent in for approval too late as indicated in the article? I happen to know a couple of folks mentioned so eventually I’ll find out the scoop.

Off topic—but I’m surprised that there was an intitial time allotment for 2 student speeches. We were told that our ceremony would be done in 1 hour, and it was. Only one speech given, the Valedictorian. Maybe we had a larger class than HC, which took up the time as individuals are called by name.
