May 22, 20188 yr I have a friend in Texas who did a video showing that it was easier to buy a gun from a store near a school than it was to buy a kitten from the local rescue shelter. This was before the Santa Fe HS schooling. Exactly. I don’t understand why we can’t address this issue in a responsible manner. It’s like the video that shows the 13 year old trying to buy cigarettes, beer and a lottery ticket and being denied but walked right into a gun show and bought a gun no questions asked. That is an issue to me.
May 22, 20188 yr I always feel responsible for what my kids do. They're their own person though after a certain age and know right from wrong. Same here. And if my kid used my gun(s) to shoot up a school then I deserve whatever penalties lie ahead. I should have been smarter and more responsible with my weapons. Had I been smarter and more responsible then my kid wouldn’t have used my guns to commit mass murder. My kids have never taken my alcohol. I know they wouldn’t be able to just take my guns either.
May 22, 20188 yr Author I haven't completely read through this thread, but I can't understand why we don't look around the globe for solutions. No other country in the world has anywhere close to the level of gun violence, specifically in schools, as we do yet we bury our heads in the sand and refuse to look at others for solutions. We can clamor that parents are responsible, and I agree in large part they share the blame with the idiot kids that do the shootings, but IMO, so does every lawmaker, politician, representative and citizen that doesn't demand we change things.
May 22, 20188 yr People choosing not to murder with their weapons doesn’t erase the intent of a weapon. It’s called a weapon for a reason. Now you're beginning to get there. Intent. It's not what they use, it's what they do with it. 100 percent a people problem is what we're saying.
May 22, 20188 yr In order to get a license you have to take a written test for a permit. Then if you pass the written test you have to drive with a licensed driver for a year before you can even take a test to get a full driver’s license. You also have to document your hours logged while driving with a permit and you have to fulfill a set amount of time driven before you can take your road test. It’s not that it is hard to get a license but you have to go through a lengthy process before you can get a license. Through that process you learn how to drive. To own a gun how long is the process? Do you have to take a test to own a gun? Do you have to get a gun permit before you get a license? When you get that gun permit do you have to learn how to use it in the presence of a licensed gun owner for the period of a year and log your hours of use in order to be able to take your gun test to become a fully licensed gun owner? You ave to pass a background check and be of the right age to buy one. All you are proving here is even with all you just posted that you have to do to get a drivers license, we still have more people killed by texting and driving than we do in mass shootings. Add drunk drivers and speeding, and it's even worse. It comes down to personal responsibility and mental stability.

May 22, 20188 yr So @Jumper Dad @Run To State @TAC if one of your kids knew how to get to your guns and took your guns and shot up a school none of you would feel responsible for your kid’s actions? I've not seen a leap like that since the Olympics :lol2: Of course I'd feel guilty, just like I would if he stole some of my beer and killed someone in a wreck or stabbed someone with my grandpa's pocket knife that had been passed down to him.

It’s like the video that shows the 13 year old trying to buy cigarettes, beer and a lottery ticket and being denied but walked right into a gun show and bought a gun no questions asked. That is an issue to me. I'll bet he bought it from an individual not a dealer at the show...if that really happened. There is no gun show loophole, dealers at gun shows have to follow same laws as every other store selling guns, including background checks. I'd bet if a 13 year old bought a gun it was from an individual selling it. Just like a 13 year old can't buy Sudafed or Ocycontin at Walgreens, it doesn't stop a drug dealer standing over buy the magazines from selling to them.

You locked up your alcohol and your car keys so your kids didnt take them from you unknowingly? Or are you saying you educated your children about the potential harm of underage drinking or underaged driving?

Had I been smarter and more responsible then my kid wouldn’t have used my guns to commit mass murder. My kids have never taken my alcohol. I know they wouldn’t be able to just take my guns either. Alcohol is a good example. Minors drinking on your property is the responsibility of the owner. Parents are much more aware this time of year when kids have parties. Bars have shared the responsibility of drunk drivers who left their establishment extremely intoxicated. Maybe not life in prison, but irresponsibility is a big portion of the problem.
May 22, 20188 yr Now you're beginning to get there. Intent. It's not what they use, it's what they do with it. 100 percent a people problem is what we're saying. Yet, there are PEOPLE in other countries. Ones that play violent video games and watch violent movies. Why do these other countries not have the gun violence we do?
May 22, 20188 yr Now you're beginning to get there. Intent. It's not what they use, it's what they do with it. 100 percent a people problem is what we're saying. Exactly. And people’s irresponsibility with guns is a major issue along with the loopholes that allow easy access to obtain guns. There’s no reason why we can’t close those loopholes.

Add drunk drivers and speeding, and it's even worse. It comes down to personal responsibility and mental stability. Agreed. My point is that if you make a person go through the same type of process to own a gun I’m sure they’ll be way more responsible not only about their ability to buy guns but with their right to legally own a gun. We have to pay car insurance to legally be on the road driving. Why can’t there be gun insurance as well? If your guns come up missing you report them stolen and if your stolen guns are used in a crime you are absolved of any wrongdoing. If you make the gun owning process more stringent then I’m sure folks will be more responsible with their guns and their ability to own guns.
May 22, 20188 yr Lets say you have a kid with a drivers license. He takes your car without your permission or knowledge and mows over a couple dozen people killing half of them. Should you go to jail? Did he mow them over on purpose and do I know that my kid has mental issues? I guarantee I’d know if my kid had mental issues and if I know my kid is dangerous not only would he never know where my car keys are but I wouldn’t have sharp objects in the house and my kid would be getting the help he/she needs. Any parent involved in their kid’s life knows what they are capable of. If I felt my kids were a danger to society or themselves they wouldn’t have access to my car keys let alone my guns.
