Gen Z Is Killing Cash

Featured Replies

Got run out of my hotel in Hawaii one time due to a Tsunami. First thing we did is raid the ATM and took a cash advance from the hotel. In case the power went out. Cash is king in that situation.

Not a huge traveler but when I do travel I take cash. Normal daily life you would be lucky to find me with cash.

Wife and I always used to take travelers checks with us on vacation. Now you can hardly find anyone who carries them and the fees are obnoxious. Our bank doesn't carry them anymore.

Scanned this thread & have one question for those who carry no cash--What do you use to tip? Not talking the obvious such as restaurants, cabs, Uber; but as one who travels a lot--Valets, Parking, Shuttle drivers, etc.?? Or do you just stiff those folks??

I can't remember the last time I used valet parking as I'd only use it if forced to, or an airport shuttle, because Uber/Lyft gets me to where I need to be. 99% of my tipping situations, I can take care of using my cards. I do carry $20-$30 with me whenever I have to fly somewhere for work, in case of emergency, but I usually end up bringing that money back home with me. I'm not a road warrior, but I fly 8-10 times a year, and do at least a couple overnight trips every month, and I really don't encounter more than a couple situations where I can only tip in cash.

If I’m going somewhere like that, which is rare, I’ll have cash.

How do you people who carry no cash buy stuff at yard sales? Flea market? Off Craigslist? I know some of the people at flea markets take cards, but not all. I have never had anyone I have sold to or bought from on Craigslist mention anything other than cash. With my business I buy cars out of the auctions. You pay with cashier's check or cash. This is called secured funds and gives you a $40 discount on each car. (Doesn't sound like much, but we buy 20-30 junk cars a week) Company checks are also accepted but it's not considered a secured fund. No credit card or venmo or whatever else you guys are using .Lol

1) I don’t valet that often and now a days a lot of valet places have apps you can download to pay online because they realized they were missing out on a potential revenue source. 2) Parking. For instance if I go to a UK basketball game or Ohio State football game I know I’m probably going to be parking in a cash only lot so in that case I’ll make sure to stop by an ATM and withdraw $20 before I go. So you got me on that one.

Simple. I don’t. Never been to a yard sale, never been to a flea market, and never bought anything on Craigslist. I’m sure if I was ever in that situation though I would go withdraw cash to pay for it. It’s not a big deal to get cash from the bank if I need it, I just don’t have a reason to ever have it on hand.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I can’t remember going to a yard sale or flea market in my adult life. Zero appeal to me.

I’ve never bought anything at a flea market, off craigslist or a yard sale in my 48 years on this earth. Nor do I work in a business where cash only transactions are necessary. And for what it’s worth, if I ever hold a yard sale, I will absolutely take credit cards with the app I used in my former side hustle.

These are all very specific situations where cash sounds like it is required. I would imagine people who do these types of activities know that cash is needed and would take cash with them prior to doing these activities. Just because we don't carry cash on a daily basis doesn't mean we can't go to the bank and withdrawal cash prior to going and doing things that obviously require cash.

Withdrawing cash certainly isn’t a difficult or painful procedure for those times when you may need it. And I do find that I have to get cash out once or twice a month for some reason. But 99% of my transactions can be done by credit card.

Met my son in Covington one evening for dinner. He was late because there was valet parking and he had no cash. Is it so hard to keep a couple $5 bills tucked in your wallet just in case?

I guess I just do things different than a lot of you. In my line of work not having cash in your pocket could mean missing the good deal. When I drive down the road and see a car for sale in someone's yard, I stop make a deal and pay for it. I sell things every day, have a lot of people that want to buy a truck I have for sale that was advertised as a (cash price)but don't have the cash on the them, say they need to run to the bank. Next guy pulls in 2 minute later with cash in hand. Who do you think just bought the truck? I understand not every one lives like I or some others do. Just couldn't imagine not having cash on me.

Nephew is in Memphis with us this weekend. We went to lunch and I was picking up the tab. He laid his money clip (actually credit card clip) and offered to pay for his meal via Venmo. I got a chuckle out of it thinking about this thread.
