March 15, 20188 yr I think Coach Justice was and maybe still is a preacher. He says the Pikeville boys were put on a platform by God and quoted bible verses in the lockerroom. What if one of his players isn't Christian? What if Coach Justice was Jewish or, heaven forbid, Catholic ? Twitter I'm Christian and Catholic so I'm down. You just can't have this in a public school. Note sure what forum this should be in.
March 15, 20188 yr It's no secret to most here that I'm pretty much a realist agnostic type with an open mind for the possibility of a god, and while I'm not too keen on people using religious beliefs to discriminate against others, or to pick and choose stuff from the Bible that conveniently helps their stances, while ignoring everything else within in that doesn't because IMO that's just wishy-washy nonsense and contradictory, but if someone wants to believe that their good fortune has been a gift from God, I have no problem with it whatsoever, and while they really can't prove it, I absolutely can't disprove it, and generally find it to be completely harmless as can be, and even somewhat endearing. Just because I don't want others discriminating against others when it comes to their religious beliefs, I don't dig the idea of making a mountain out of people's freedom to believe and worship in a way that brings peace to their lives. If a kid on the team doesn't buy into it, then so be it, he doesn't have to.
March 15, 20188 yr This thread will probably get shut down or moved but I'll chime in. I'm a Christian but am a huge believer in separation of church and state. I doubt God was against John Hardin winning and that he wanted the Pikeville players to win for some greater purpose. Edited March 15, 20188 yr by Mediocre Nachos
March 15, 20188 yr I have zero issues with what he said. He spoke from the heart and I love when people speak from the heart whether I agree with them or not. He will get more praise for what he said than negativity. That being said, if he had said “Allah put them on a platform” we all know what the fallout would be right now. I don’t have a problem with either being said but there is the separation of the church and state for a reason.
March 15, 20188 yr I would assume a supreme deity would be more concerned with many other things , say starving third world kids for example, than a Kentucky high school winning a basketball game.

Earlier in the post you put Catholic in a list with being Jewish when comparing it to being Christian.

Was he putting Christian church, Catholic church and other religions believing in the Holy Trinity, under the umbrella of Christianity? And not meaning the specific Christian Church? No, if you are Catholic, you are a member of Christianity. I think that was his intent.
March 15, 20188 yr Why can’t he say that? I’d say most African Americans when they win something and get interviewed say “first I’d like to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ...... No one bats an eye

No one bats an eye 1. Not just blacks say that. I’ve seen plenty of white people say it too. No need to single us out to prove your point. Whatever it is. 2. Are the people who say that teachers or employees of the state are we talking about athletes and entertainers? The topic in this thread is about teachers/coaches saying it in a public school setting. Not just randoms.
March 15, 20188 yr Quit being so sensitive. He’s a white coach and someone said he shouldn’t be saying what he said. I just said it goes on everywhere
March 15, 20188 yr School Graduation - started with a prayer School athletic event - started with a prayer School end of game team huddle - ended with a prayer Happens everywhere, its only an issue when someone wants it to be an issue.

No, if you are Catholic, you are a member of Christianity. I think that was his intent. That’s how I see it. Catholics are Christians and Christian religion. The way it was phrased or portrayed just came across odd. I don’t see an issue with it but that’s just my opinion
March 15, 20188 yr Author I have zero issues with what he said. He spoke from the heart and I love when people speak from the heart whether I agree with them or not. I don’t have a problem with either being said but there is the separation of the church and state for a reason. We generally agree on this and your 2nd paragraph is part of the reason for my original post. Most people have no problem with it b/c they believe in the same good as Coach Justice. Normal reaction. However, we can't have people in authority positions working for the state "pushing" a religion. Some will disagree with the "pushing" point but that's b/c you're Christian. If you're not then you'll probably think its pushing. The courts have been consistent on this. No ill will towards Coach Justice and I'd bet he's a wonderful human being. However, when you're in authority in a state school you can't "push" a religion.
