They are at a disadvantage geographically because they are at the direct opposite end of the country from the majority of the country’s best teams. They aren’t a big enough name to get invited to early season tournaments. They traveled to Georgia this year. Do you want them to make a couple of trips across the country every year? That’s just not practical. I’ll give you the bad losses, but they have 5 losses on the season it’s not like they made a habit of it. Yep. Travel to where ever you need to go. That is how Gonzaga did it and does it. Same conference. Same profile. Gonzaga has a SOS of 154, significantly higher. Here are other teams in St. Mary's conference. BYU - SOS 120 San Diego - SOS 165 San Francisco - SOS 95 Pepperdine - SOS 127 Loyola Marymount - SOS 171 Pacific - SOS 108 Portland - SOS 145 Santa Clara - SOS 203 So St. Mary's has the worst SOS in their conference. No excuses. No tournament for you IMO.

St Mary’s is also the smallest school in the conference and may not have the resources to travel all over the country like Gonzaga and BYU who have the success and resources over the years to fund the program to be able to travel. Also IMO you are really splitting hairs with teams with SOS over 50. Outside of the top 100 it’s essentially meaningless. The SOS metric is arbitrarily comparing one schedule of bad teams to another schedule of bad teams and the differences past that point are marginal at best. Louisville had their chance to end all of this by simply sealing the win against UVA. If they win that game it’s a no doubter, but there is nothing that separates them from any of the other bubbles teams besides the name on the front of the jersey.
March 10, 20188 yr I hate to say it but if it comes down to a 50/50 decision between UL and another team, it would be easy for the committee to choose the other team-----because of UL's transgressions. The committee would vehemently deny that this factored at all into their decision, and maybe it didn't consciously, but the members are human and no doubt UL screwed up and brought shame to college basketball.
March 11, 20188 yr I saw a crazy stat... there has only been one time in the history of the NCAA tournament that a team with a top 40 RPI failed to make it. It hasn’t happened since the expansion to 68. If we don’t get in, it wasn’t because we didn’t beat Virginia. There are 7 or 8 games that were ripe for the taking. We should have cashed in against miami and Clemson on the road. We should have taken care of seton hall, Florida State and Syracuse at home. We lost by 8 or so against Purdue, but it was back and forth the entire game. Virginia is obvious. If any of those games bounce the other way, we are no doubt in. What’s really awful is that I really think we have good players. I really like David, but if Coach Pitino had this team we’d have been something like a 3 seed...or at the worst, solidly in the field receiving an at large bid. I totally agree that they lost too many that should have been won. Miami, the second one to Florida State, Syracuse, and others. Between all of those that were lost is the reason I believe that their last two regular season games could really hurt them. Definitely hope I’m wrong.

Every team should get judged by the same standards. If St. Mary's can't compete in D1 and travel, then why should they get a break? That isn't fair to the other 350 D1 teams. If they aren't able to do better with their schedule, then they have to win their tournament to get in like NKU.

March 11, 20188 yr Out. A10 Davidson just popped the bubble. I thought UL was in until that. I would still find a way to get them in myself but I'm not so sure the committee will given the circumstances. That said, I've always felt like the bracket is finalized on Saturday, so who knows.

Davidson doesn’t deserve to be in, just like the team who won last night that has a losing record that will be in the dance. NKU has a solid argument for that with the Horizon this year but unfortunately it’s only going to be the automatic qualifier. The bigger conferences will never lose the at large bids, which wouldn’t bother me if it ever started happening.
