I think Coach Schneider hit the nail on the head when he was quoted in today's Kentucky Post.

 

"It wouldn't be the biggest problem for us in Northern Kentucky because the rule states that, for example, students in a diocesan school can go to any high school they choose," said Newport Catholic High School football coach Bob Schneider, a member of the KHSAA Board of Control. "The only thing that would be affected is that there are a lot more children in Catholic grade schools than in Catholic high schools. So, a number of people who would be sending their children to public high schools (after attending Catholic grade schools) wouldn't see them eligible for any sports the first year."

 

Your law suit will come from a Parent who lives in a school district, pays property taxes to that district, send his/her child to a private grade/middle school, then wants to send that child to a public school for high school, only to be told that the child can't play sports of any kind at any level for a year. Lawyers must be drooling looking for such a kid and a parent willing to go to court, when and if the BOE agrees to such a rule.....

 

Just a question? Will that child be able to play in the band, be on the academic team, run for student government, be a member of the chorus, or be involved in any of the couple hundred other extracurriculars actives that most high school children can participate in? If you take sports away from a child, why stop at just that, lets just say the kid can't do anything except go to school for a year......

I didn't wait that long. I knew where my kids would go to school long before they were born.

Yes, but my Catholic School Education taught me to understand that people made mistakes from time to time, even spelling errors and worse.....becasue we are human beings. Thats why we Catholics go to Confession, so we may admit to our sins, and to ask God forgiveness.

Our kids are just as much citizens of this commonwealth as public school kids, so thank you very much, we'll stay.

I love it, when the public side tries to ram their will down our throats it's what's best for the kids but whem the private school support the rights of their students it's arrogance.:creepy:

 

Maybe, just maybe the reason that "the KHSAA and the BOE is scared of the "best laywers money can buy" from the privates" is because what the members of the Board of Delegates and now to BOC have approveded is blatant discrimination based on choice of school and it won't hold up to legal scrutiny.

Since in a democracy majority rules, I guess it is a good thing we live in a republic and not a democracy. Second, one of the things our constitution does is protect the rights of a minority from the tyranny of an overreaching majority. That wasn't hard to figure out at all. In fact, I learned it in 10th grade history class.

 

As far as a solution, athletic recruiting is already a violation of KHSAA rules. Prop 8 was a very effective way to enforce the existing rules. It was sponsored by the private schools. An insufficient number of public schools voted for it to allow it to pass. Go figure.

I'd challenge Mike to back up his statements if he's going to throw the "recruiting" charge out there.

Anyone of you that thinks recruiting doesn't go on is very sadly mistaken. I do not think that recruiting is limited to privates, I may even think as a whole the publics are worse for this. I do think however the majority of the problems arising that has got us to this point is Lexington Catholic's boys and girls program. I think that the All Male and All Female schools do have a advantage, just that they have more numbers to pick from. Do they recruit? They go after the middle school kids to attend their respective schools. Is that not kinda how it works? Do not tell me that a stud of a football player is not gone after harder at St X or Trinity than a regular student? Or do you think a Div 1 girls player takes second fiddle to a potential Beta club member at Sacred Heart?

 

Who is guilty of this? Both Publics and Privates. Do we need twice as many members on the KHSAA? No. All everyone needs is to enforce the current rules and leave the money out of it. Yes I said money.

Maybe he needs to worry a little less about recruiting and a little more on controlling students who have forced Homecoming to be canceled forever.

I have never posted on this particular aspect of the forum, but after the past few days feel it is due. I am from as true of a public school as you can find, Belfry, and what I see the KHSAA doing is unexcusable.

 

The KHSAA is on a witch hunt against about 3 individual schools (Trinity, X, and LexCath) and in the process is hurting numerous other schools and the students that will attend them.

 

Do I feel that the three schools have a legitimate leg up? Yes, absolutely. In fact it has been documented that LexCath has used their assets to recruit players specifically for academics. But, consequently it is in 9 out 10 cases the parent's unsolicited decision to send their kid there, whether it be for the obvious academic benefits, the obvious increase of exposure for college scholarships, or the better facilities both in the classroom or on the playing field.

 

With the latest proposal, one should consider NKY. Dayton, Ludlow, and Bellevue demographically speaking is not the wealthiest part of the state. Directly related to that, IMO, their school districts are not as enterprising and the educational opportunities pell in comparison to a CovCath, Holy Cross, etc. Not all families have the luxury of sending their children to an all private school feeder system. It is too expensive. Thus, you find the trend of parents who wait until their children reach high school before sending them there. Now, this will result in the child sitting out a year of sports, which is in my opinion one of the most valuable experiences a child can undergo.

 

Now with this being said, what really set me over was the unwillingness to pass laws that would strengthen the KHSAA ability to investigate recruiting and increase compliance. It seems as if the KHSAA simply said, "Whatever, lets just get over with."

 

Great post and right on point. I have 4 children. My wife and I choose to send them to a parochial school 1-8 grade. Two are now in high school. I gave them both a choice as to which high school they could attend. One went to a private and the other a public. Ironically enough they both would have went to the opposite school had they made their decision in the 6th grade. Now I have a 4th grader who will have to decide as a 6th grader what route he wants to take. I do not know why KHSAA thinks this will reduce recruiting as it will only push it down to the 6th grade.
