They probably won't make it, but what is wrong with them working toward getting there or believing that there is a possibility if they work hard? You pick who you want, I agree that team B would probably win, but don't take the other kids aspirations away from them because you don't think they can pull it off.

 

So I guess if my team isn't in the top ten, they should pack it in. After the season they had last year, I am pretty sure that they won't be.

 

I don't think anyone said don't work or try to win. But, if 220 (right? 221?) teams set out and say their goal is a title or failure, then 95% of the teams failed.

 

Your goal has to be to play your best game that week. If you win, great. If you lose, learn from it. I've seen a team bring one of their best possible games they could, and come up short. And I've seen that same team have an above average game and absolutely slaughter another team.

 

 

If I was the head coach of a team, I'd tell them to give their all to win that week. If it's week 0, round 1, or round 5, then give everything you can to come out on the right side of the score board. If I end the season and 4-6, and they absolutely gutted out every game, then I'm going to be proud of what they did. And if they hit everything perfectly and we all get a ring? Then I'm proud, again.

 

 

Not every team is capable of winning a championship in a given year. We can talk about changing culture and demanding excellence, but we also have to be honest. We can eliminate about 85% of the teams in contention for a state championship, by July. Does that mean they have nothing to play for? Of course not.

Nobody is saying it can NEVER be done. You point out that it took a decade for BC to get there. You think those teams in years 1-5 REALLY thought they were going to win a ring?

 

It's a gradual process.

 

Took 7 years to go from winless, to 15-0. Thats not a decade, and if you look at 1997 Boyle had a real legitimate shot at winning a title in just 5 years. I am not saying that a team wins every year, or that if you don't win its a failure. I have seen a lot of excuses though on why it's unattainable in this region, or this town, or this school.

 

UCF was winless 2 season ago, this year they were undefeated. They had to recruit no stars through two star kids because no one wanted to go to a winless school. Changing a culture is everything, UCF went undefeated with far less talent than almost every single team they played. It's much harder to do it at the D1 level than it is to win a 2a or 4a state title.

The goal of sports is to prepare to win a championship. That's not the same thing as the goal being to win a championship.

 

Every single athlete can be the best he/she can be by preparing. That is success.

Very, very few ever win a championship....and that's certainly not failure.

I know everyone is looking at this from the current Kentucky football perspective, with regards to number of schools vs. classes. Somebody even mentioned that you're only looking at being the best of 35 schools or so. So, does the goal change if you go to a different sport, or a different state? Is the goal for a basketball team different because there's no class differential, and thus the odds are much more against you? In my mind, no. Which is why the answer to the original question is...no.

 

A state championship in and of itself should never be the goal. It can be a result, sure. But, it is not the goal. The goal should be to play to the best of your ability, and to improve each time out. This goes for the individual, as well as the team. And not just from year to year, but week to week, heck maybe even day to day. Learn how to deal with obstacles and possibly even failure (which translates into a great life lesson).

 

Sure, those at the top (or near the top) are going to like the taste of success and want more of it. And, more often than not, success breeds success. (I think it's much easier to stay at the top than it is to get there in the first place.) But, for the other 95% of the teams who fail to win state, they can still have very "successful" years, even without the title.

We are talking high school football and culture change. The playoff committee choosing not to take an undefeated FBS team is bogus in it's own right, but had this been a high school team taking far inferior talent like UCF did, and went undefeated it would be in the playoff and have the chance to show what they could do.

 

Did Scott Frost come in and get 5 star recruits? Half of his starters were starting on the winless team, its about culture change and its even easier to do that at a high school level. UCF went undefeated with 2 star and below kids, if they can do it, so can a high school team.

 

Not every team can win a championship, only 6 can (which is still far to many,) but a team should always set that as their goal, always.

I know we are talking football and maybe that's the difference... but we broke the basketball huddle every day after practice my whole career (not in KY) saying "1-2-3 district champs". We had a goal, we were focused, and we strived to reach it everyday. That was our GOAL

 

But the PURPOSE of playing was completely different. I loved every minute of my career because it was fun. It was spending time with my friends, getting lots of cool experiences, seeing my name in the paper, talking about cheerleaders, getting better, competing, learning about life, having little kids look up to you - man! it was fun!

 

We never got a sniff at a district title and we didn't say 1-2-3 state champs because we never had a shot. Did we reach the goal? No, but we fulfilled the purpose.

I think many of you have unrealistic ideas of HS football. Many schools have no shot of ever winning a title, but many of you seem to take it for granted. Some just want to compete.

I have no idea when any of those kids played compared to what year they won championships but you can’t just divide the players by years. I mean you can but it can (not sure it does) skew the numbers. A school has those kids for 3-4 years. So there can be a number of years that overlap. If you say it average to a little more than one a championship it would come out to more like 3-4 of them on a team at a time. Lies, damn lies and statistics.

 

Now the UCF comparison is just silly. Those little 2 stars are Florida speed. Those guys might of been 2 stars because of their weight or height. When you look at Super Bowl teams they have very few 4-5 stars. I think in the Pats Seahawks game there were like two. Point being is they weren’t playing with a bunch of scrubs. The other thing is UCF has a paid coaching staff and that is what they do. Their coaches don’t have to worry about teaching loads, faculty meetings or if there is even a teaching position in a coach’s subject matter. So let’s not say because UCF did it that a HS should be able to just do it.

Let's also not forget if we are using the UCF argument, that they didn't play a single ranked team during the regular season. They only won 1 game against a team that would have been deemed to have unquestionably better players.

 

So, that comparison isn't even close to being valid.
