All A a KHSAA event?

One is the KHSAA state championship, the other is the All A Classic State Championship. But they’re both statewide tournaments, not invitationals. They both have regional tournaments and state tournaments. The only difference is they’re run and sponsored by different organizations. The fact that the All A Classic State Tournament is not run by the KHSAA doesn’t diminish it’s status as a state tournament in the least.

My school was runner-up to University Heights in the 1990 All A State Tournament, held at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, and we proudly put a banner up in our gym to celebrate it. Also had a row of cars a couple miles long that met our bus at the county line as it came back from Lexington and followed the police and fire truck escort back to the school. That sort of thing doesn’t occur at our school if we win an invitational tournament. Of course, we were only runner-up but it was still a big deal to our community. And on a side note, although we were only runner-up, we had the MVP of the tournament that year in Jeff “Moose” Moore, who still holds several Class A state scoring records. That tournament enabled him to be a 1st team All State player that year and go on to a nice college career at a school in Florida.

So KY has 2 state champs? Well we better start labelling things accurately then. No more of this "One state champion" nonsense.

So you are saying that Kentucky crowns more than one state champion im basketball? Sort of undoes the mythos of the Sweet 16 and our "One State Champ" mindset doesn't it?

No not at all. It takes absolutely zero away from the sweet 16 state champ. Because since every school in Kentucky competes in that. The winner of that is the Kentucky state champ, and is recognized as such.

All the All A does is recognize who would be the state champ in this state from its enrollment number in that.

It's seriuosly the best of both worlds. Small schools get a fair chance to see where they stand in the state against similar enrollment numbers. While we also still get a chance to see who the single best team in the whole state is.

It's crazy the big deal some of you all make of that All A being called the All A State champ. The All A is the only reason the khsaa has been able to state with one state champ. While the khsaa may not truly sponsor it. The khsaa loves that it exist. Because they can keep the state tournament the way it is. Or else or would be classes by now if not for the All a.

If you have never been to an "All A" regional finals, go to one. Afterwards, give your opinion. Those kids play for a chance to go to a "state" tournament (albeit the All A). The atmosphere is very different than a regular season game between the same schools. Whether sanctioned by the KHSAA or not, it is a statewide tournament for those who meet the small school criteria. This is good for the schools involved and it is good for the KHSAA.

It's not football, I don't really care. I am just arguing a point of detail not passion. HSBBall is irrelevant in my world. I just want things to be given their proper names.

All A State Champion

Kentucky State Champion

What is wrong with having those two names that reflect what the winner of each tournament won?

No matter how bad some of you want the All A Classic to be a state championship it is not a state championship.

I think if you want the KHSAA State Tournament to one champion, then you better be glad the All A State is a thing. It saved the Sweet 16.

Also it is accurately termed as:

All ‘A’ Statewide Basketball Tournament

See above.

You and I are on the same page Pep.

Everyone, I love the All A Classic or All A Statewide Basketball Tournament (or whatever it is called these days).

Well run, exciting, and every bit a "State Championship" to the teams that win it.

If the KHSAA wants to put their name on the All A Classic nothing is wrong with it.

Do you think it is wrong for a team that wins an All A title to hang a banner in their gym or put the All A championship trophy in their trophy case?

I just want you to get your location right... what is relaive dimensions in space??? Also, if you don't care about HSBB, your opinion is irrelevant. You go tell the 32 teams competing in Richmond this week that they are competing for nothing more than a glorified tournament championship. I think not. It IS a statewide championship for small schools.
