Will Covington Catholic be the top team in 5A in 2018?

Featured Replies

The JV team went 7 - 1, only losing to Trinity 21 - 7. Most of the wins were convincing win. Hopefully, CovCath has reached the point where rising juniors can be plugged in without a significant loss of production. Always nice to have 4 of 5 lineman returning to help break in new starters.

On most teams I think OL is one of the key factors in success, maybe even number 1. In the CCH system, I don't think OL is as critical. QB is more important in the CCH system than in most schools.

Don't disagree with any of this. But having 4 of 5 starting o-lineman helps any program breaking in a new qb, no matter the offensive schemes.

Graduating starters:

Offense

RG Maile (2 way starter)

TE Butler (2 way starter)

WR Pike (2 way starter)

WR Lenihan (2 way starter)

QB Mayer

Defense

DL Deters

DL Maile (2 way starter)

LB Butler (2 way starter)

LB Dyer (also played a lot of offense at RB)

DB Pike (2 way starter)

CB Schneider

CB Lenihan (2 way starter)

That is 12 starting positions CCH will need to replace. That is a lot of talent lost. A lot, including a very special QB and MLB.

If we go to the backups, 11 of the 2 deep backup positions were filled by seniors.

The CCH roster is losing a lot. This will be a big challenge for the program next year.

The good news for CCH fans is they have two D1 talents who play both sides of the ball returning next year - TE/DE Mayer and WR/DB Coldiron. They also have a good RB returning - McGinness. And as mentioned above 4 returning OL led by the big and talented Jones. Special players make a huge difference and are the foundations you build a winner around.

That is a lot of talent they are losing. Crazy what playing your best players both ways gets you.

A State Championship! Take note local coaches!!!

No. South Warren and Bowling Green will both be better than CovCath next season. The 5A state title will be the winner of that game when these two meet in the playoffs.

Bowling Green will definitely be better next season. Don't know about south warren. CCH I am sure won't rest on it's past laurels so they will be in the hunt. But to say that the Championship game for 5a will be between South Warren and Bowling Green......... You are assuming a lot. I guess you figure every other team is just not going to attempt to get better. Owensboro won't go 4-7 next year, I am pretty sure of that. Chrstian County isn't going to just stand by either. Graves is usually pretty tough. You have your opinion and I have mine. Maybe we'll get a chance to talk about it if you make it down to Owensboro in September when the purples and the devils hook up for the first time next season. Burgers and sodas on me.

Should be interesting

Not just local coaches, I know a couple coaches in Western KY that could take note of that.

Correct. An experienced line plus McGinness will help the Colonels.

With all the running clocks this past season, you’d think the potential starter for this upcoming season saw some serious varsity reps, correct?

Could be but those reps aren't the same as when something is on the line and the potential starter could be playing against back ups also. You know not all varsity time is equal.

IMO South Warren will be better than Bowling Green next year.

Thanks for the invite. I don’t live in Bowling Green anymore. My kids are Boyle County Rebels and I plan to move to Lexington later this year so if Owensboro or someone not named BG or SW emerges from the west in 5A we’ll catch up at the state finals burgers and sodas will be on me. :thumb:

That's probably true. It's not like they let the backup QB sling it when the running clock is going. The backup looked like nice-sized athlete. I'm sure if he's not the main QB they'll find a place to play him.

IMO South Warren will be better than Bowling Green next year.

Good. Not many guys can foot that bill

Add in a DI TE/DE with Coldiron and I think they will figure out how to score. Losing Butler and Dyer is the biggest blow. They were 2 of CovCath’s all timers at LB.

IMO South Warren will be better than Bowling Green next year.

That will work.
