No need to play 6A if their enrollment says 5A.

To be the best you have to play the best.

Cov Cath could have scored theee less touchdowns per game and still topped 5A last year. They could get Ws without running clocks and come out on top again but we won’t know till Dec. A year ago there was plenty of debate about who would win 5A and no one dreamed 15-0 with running clocks.

As was pointed out elsewhere, CCH is actually on the small end of 5A, the 64th team according the classification list.

To think they will dominate like last year is quite a stretch. Last year was something special. Teams like that don't happen every year... Or every decade for that matter. This year they will be a Top team in NKY (along with HHS in 5A and Ryle and SK in 6A). In 5A, there will be a handful of teams in the drivers seat (CCH,HHS,BG,SouthWarren). Who stays healthy and what leaders step up will be the difference, but to think it's going to be running clocks every 5A or KY game again is just not going to happen.

I think Cov Cath will be heads and shoulders above the rest of NKY. This past year it wasn’t even close and they still return a ton including basically the entire o-line. Mayer is considered one of the top TE’s and defensive ends in his class in the country for a reason and then you have your running back, back and Coldiron back who is also a 6’5” receiver as well. I don’t care who the QB is. How do you cover both? They also have another 6’4” receiver, who will be a senior. It will be very tough for HS DB’s to cover all of that size and as big as they are, they can all run. After Cov Cath it’s BW, SK, Highlands and Ryle, but they are not on Cov Cath’s level in my opinion.

How about Covington Catholic step up and play 6A.. That way we can truly see what their made of

It seems to me that moving forward outside of the big 3 in Louisville, 5A is going to have more quality teams. 6A is a joke outside of those 3 and Scott County who is moving to 5A.

NO.

Who is the favorite then

Welcome to BGP, Bill...and I agree with you about the sophomore QB having a good shot at starting.

Tyler Reusch is going to be a senior next year, and for most of the season last year he was the QB they sent in once the varsity games were in-hand. They would occasionally go with a wildcat look, with RB Casey McGinness behind center. The telling detail about Reusch is the fact that with 100+ snaps in varsity play, they only gave him 3 or 4 pass attempts total throughout the entire season. I think McGinness - a running back - probably had just as many passing plays called out of the wildcat. I didn't have a chance to watch any of the JV games last season, so I can't say what Tyler's passing game looked like in those, but regardless, when you've got a weapon like Jack Coldiron at receiver, and other talented WR's like Zach Coburn and Luke Summe returning, it's clearly in your best interest to make sure that your starting QB doesn't lack when it comes to having a good passing game.

The incoming sophomore QB, Caleb Jacob, is very solid for being an incoming sophomore. He is a good passer, and you can tell just from watching him that he plays with a pretty cool head. He's also Coach Eviston's nephew, which I've heard a small handful of folks mention as a potential issue just because it could give off the appearance of Eddie playing favorites. I'd also have to guess that anyone who has watched with much enthusiasm, though, can tell you that it would be a positive move for the team to get Caleb some significant playing time next year. Cov Cath has seen some good fortune in the past with 3-year starters at QB. Adam McCormack, Jarod Kees (97 state championship), AJ Mayer (17 championship)...

I don't imagine Eddie being a coach who goes for having QBs split time in the backfield, and my best guess would be that we'll have a Caleb Jacob starting at QB next year, and that we'll see Tyler Reusch spending more time at linebacker, or maybe playing some in the slot on the offensive side.

A little puzzled by the failure to mention the #1 tight end recruit in the nation here ... surely Michael Mayer will add a little to the receiving corps ...

Mayer, coldiron, and McGinnis (sp) will be great , but to say it doesn’t matter who plays qb is just an ignorant statement. Mayer was one of the best leaders at THE most important position on the field. Will they be very good, yes. Are they heads and shoulders better than anyone else, no.

Didn’t say QB doesn’t matter. They were at least 5 TD’s better than everyone in NKY last year. Do you really think because they lost the QB and a few other guys that they are going to fall that far back? They put running clocks on everyone in KY and the QB rarely played more than 2 or 2.5 qtrs.

I'm almost scared if they are just because there would be more talk about separating private and public schools since Trinity also dominates 6a.

It bugs me because next no one comes to CCH just to play sports and the ones who do don't last too long. And it's also not like CCH is loaded with unlimited athletes who are dominant because they wouldn't have players going both ways if they did.

CCH has a winning tradition and a way of doing things that's hard to match.

Are you saying since CCH won a state title in 5A, and should have another shot at the 5A title this coming season, that people will want to separate the publics and privates in NKY? That's funny. :lol2:

I won't bring my winning tradition dog in this fight, but, a couple other teams/programs in NKY might chime in.

Please define tough season.

Good point, compared to the one they just had. I think winning competitive games would be considered tough.

Considering they beat every team this season by a wide margin and people have been complaining about the things I mentioned for years, yes I am.

It was fine when Highlands was winning title after title (before Dale left), but now that CCH's program is building and the feeder system is becoming stronger, I'm sure that it won't be long until they start chiming in.
