January 4, 20188 yr Koback was granted permission to go to Toledo. Stoops said the team's policy is to block transfers to any school appearing on the upcoming schedules. Said after meeting with Koback and him asking to make an exception, he agreed to allow him to go to Toledo and Eastern Michigan.
January 4, 20188 yr Several things come to mind here for me regarding Drew Barker. To say that he is a low level D1 recruit is frankly laughable. The Ole Ball Coach certainly went after him hot and heavy. Johnson was a good athlete, but not even near an average QB. This also shows me how awful the coaching staff is at evaluating talent and how to develop it, see Matt Elam and Cole Mosier and prime examples. This whole 2 star, 3 star and 4 star thing is an absolute joke as proven every year in college football when some unknown and unrecruited walk on has success at the D1 level, see Hunter Renfro or the kid from Auburn. All of the "star" rankings are nothing more than a dog and pony show where kids go around the country to pay their money to be "seen". I will use my son as a prime example of how this stuff works. He was unable to run the camp circuit in the summer because of injuries and more the fact that I just did not have the money to run him all over the country. This prevented him from getting a sniff at the big time schools. I have had many people ask me over the last few years why he is at Lindsey Wilson and not a bigger school. Well the answer is pretty simple when you get right down to it. This pretty much backs up my comments....highly recruited, 3-4-5 star, etc... you can look great when you are seen in the right light. Barker was a bust and a non-leader...a lot of locals were and are still hyped on him, but what did he really do at the high school level to garner such attention ? Keep backing him if you want. I wish the best for him, but this was never going to work out from Day 1 . UK sending him 100 letters a day makes for nice social media hype, but don't you think they had to go after this kid because he was a Kentucky "4 star" ? Of course they did....
January 4, 20188 yr If the criteria of choosing a school because you are a fan is the measure, then probably about the same time that most people said the exact same thing about Pat Towles...but whose counting ? He may have done well at EKU....but that got knocked out early I see what you did there! :lol2:

UK sending him 100 letters a day makes for nice social media hype, but don't you think they had to go after this kid because he was a Kentucky "4 star" ? Of course they did.... The only reason his teams in high school didn't do more wasn't because of him. It was because of the defense at time. When you lose a game 68 to 58 in the playoffs. That is not because of qb play. Unless you want to fault the qb for not scoring 69. His high school play evaluated the team and made the players around him better. That is one thing that coaches recognized. His ability to change plays at the line based off coverages is another thing they recognized. His work ethic and leadership in high school was another to go along with obviuosly all the camp stuff. He may be a bust on college but no one truly knows still. Be basically had 2 games. One of those games he played well enough for the team to win scoring over 30 points. The defense was bad. He then gets hurt and UK changes their offensive strategy with Johnson and decide to focus on the run game which they didn't do when Barker was at qb. Switching to the run game helped the defense by keeping them off the field and led to wins. So no coach was going to make a change as long as the team is winning. So no there is no solid proof that he was a bust, when you don't get the opportunity it's hard to be called a bust. Depending where he goes we will find out more if he was a bust or more of a victim of getting hurt and someone taking over and didn't get a chance again.
January 4, 20188 yr He should have gone to South Carolina and played for a coach who actually knows how to develop QBs. Didn’t he choose UK after Stoops took over the job and Drew and Neal Brown developed a close relationship which also helped sway him to UK? UK wasn’t a choice of his until Stoops took over, correct? Drew wasn’t a flop. He played what, 2-3 real games without injury and never played serious time again once healthy, correct? Hardly enough to know how good he really is or could have been. It’s not like he started for two years in a row and still never did anything. I wish him luck wherever he lands. I wish he had never chosen UK. Should have gone to play for Steve.

Well Steve got fired after UK beat him but maybe Drew would have avoided injuries there.
January 4, 20188 yr Weird trend seeing 4 star after 4 star HS QB, being replaced by Juco’s at UK. Agreed, neither should have been touted as highly as they were.

January 4, 20188 yr Impartial outside observer here, dudes not starting anywhere that is a “good” team. Maybe he plays better than what I’ve seen. From what I’ve seen. He’s just not good enough. I agree. Maybe physically talented but not mental enough? I saw him play a few in high school and wondered what the fuss was about him.

What QB did Spurrier develop while at SC? Seemed to me it was constant turmoil at the QB position during his tenure.
January 5, 20188 yr What QB did Spurrier develop while at SC? Seemed to me it was constant turmoil at the QB position during his tenure. What QBs have been developed at UK ever in the history of their program? At the very least we can go back and look at Steve’s history with QBs and compare results.

January 5, 20188 yr Author I agree. Maybe physically talented but not mental enough? I saw him play a few in high school and wondered what the fuss was about him. What games did you watch because when I saw him play the dude looked like a can’t miss prospect to me. He toyed with every defense he faced in HS. If you want to say the quality of defense he faced in KY isn’t great compared to the caliber of athletes he would face in college that’s cool, but you’re remembering things incorrectly IMO if you didn’t think he lived up to the hype in HS.

Who was a better high school QB - Barker or Tanner Morgan?
