Not a SW fan in the slightest. Just funny to me seeing so much overconfidence. BG running clocked SW mid-season and they lost to that same SW team tonight. Anything can happen, that’s what makes this time of year so fun for the casual fan.

Congrats Colonels! Very good game all around. I especially liked the lack of penalties. Off the top of my head I only remember one. Great job. Keep working and go get em next week!

South football falls to Covington Catholic

 

Covington Catholic football showed why it has been ranked as the top team in Class 5-A, defeating South Oldham 49-7 in Crestwood to win the Region 2 title and advance to the state semi-finals. The Dragons fell behind early and were never able to recover against a team that has won all 13 games this season by 21 or more points.

 

South Oldham coach Jamie Reed didn’t think his team needed to play a perfect game to compete with Covington Catholic, but needed to get off to a good start in the first quarter.

 

“We didn’t have a lot of room for error. We felt good about our plan coming in,” Reed said. “We thought we would be able to move the ball offensively, but we were not able to move the ball as well as we thought we would. It snowballed fast. They have a very potent offense.”

Coldiron very active in the game tonight offensively.

CovCath beats South Oldham 49-7, wins Class 5A, Region 2 title for first time since 2006

 

CRESTWOOD, Ky. – For Covington Catholic, Friday night kept the status quo.

 

The Colonels’ first regional title since 2006 was won as emphatically as every regular season game this season, as CovCath beat South Oldham 47-7 at Dragon Stadium in the Kentucky Class 5A, Region 2 title game.

 

The game had the potential to be close. While CovCath entered the matchup atop the Associated Press state poll, South Oldham was in fourth. Both teams were first and third, respectively, in state scoring, too. Yet once the game began, the Colonels never looked remotely close to being threatened.

 

"That was a good game," CovCath head coach Eddie Eviston said. "Obviously at this time of year, we've been grinding. You have to continue to play great football."

 

On its first five possessions of the game, CovCath scored five touchdowns. Led by quarterback AJ Mayer, who’s committed to Miami University, the offense comfortably produced 284 yards in the first half. Leading 35-0, Mayer had already thrown five touchdown passes: twice to Jack Coldiron, then to Sam Schuh, Malachi Pike and Casey McGuinness.

Why did Cov let them score 7?

 

There was like 3 minutes left in the game on a running clock. I am pretty sure no starters were still in as we had already left.

Would you be saying it is overconfidence if we were talking about Trinity? I don't think it is overconfidence. The fact is, Covington Catholic is that good this year. I hear what you are saying about anything can happen, but with Covington Catholic this year it would be the shocker of all shockers if they don't win a title. I don't think that means Covington Catholic isn't going to work their tails off this week. If overconfidence were a problem, that would have happened already this season.

Congratulations to the CovCath Colonels on a really impressive victory last night.

 

The Colonels put the pressure on quickly, scoring on their first possession, forcing a three-and-out, then scoring on their second possession to put South in a quick 14-0 hole. South had only trailed by 14 points once this season - the season-opening 28-14 loss to CAL.

 

Was really impressed by the Colonels, on-and-off the field. Everyone I met was very courteous and classy. I had a really great call with the Athletic Director a few nights before the game....he was kind enough to talk CovCath football with me for nearly an hour, which helped our broadcast tremendously.

 

My apologies to the kicker... I thought I had all the pronunciations down pat, but goofed on that one. (That was probably mom or dad who emailed during the game! LOL! Thanks)

 

Some game notes:

 

- A J Mayer had five touchdown passes, the most in any game he's played this year.

- Mayer is easily one of the best HS passers I've seen in my 38 years of announcing. What distinguishes him from most, though, was his extraordinary timing. He had a cannon for an arm, pinpoint accuracy, and gets rid of the ball so that the receiver has it nearly in his hands just as he's completing his route. Can't remember the last HS quarterback I've seen who could do that this well.

- CovCath did not punt until the second half.

- South moved the ball on the ground, but give the Colonels credit; South's (unofficial) 158 yards on the ground was barely half their average of nearly 300 yards rushing a game.

- Tremendous game by the CovCath receivers. They all seem to be cut from the same cloth - tall, lanky, fast, and great hands.

- We felt that turnovers would be huge. South had not lost the turnover battle in a single game this year, and - as the underdog - needed to win this one. Instead, CC won the turnover war 4-0, as South lost two fumbles, one INT, and had a turnover on downs.

- CovCath did a nice job of negating South's size and strength in the trenches.

- Thought South had a chance to make this a bit more interesting as they showed they could run the ball, but an inability to balance the offense with the passing game doomed South. Kind of surprised; QB Drew Zaubi - like Mayer, a three year starter - actually has three year stats that are similar to Mayer. Zaubi has thrown over 60 TD passes in his three seasons. But Zaubi was a little off, the receivers had some drops, and the Colonels did a nice job of playing the receivers tight. It was nice that Drew's final pass at South went for a TD; unless I'm mistaken, his first pass as a starter two years ago as a sophomore went for a touchdown, too...

 

I also want to thank the folks earlier in this thread who had some nice things to say about our broadcast. Ed and I thoroughly enjoyed calling the game - though he was plowing through Kleenex like he had stock in the company, and my voice was on its last legs!!

 

For CovCath - congrats on a magnificent win. Well-coached, well-played. You'll be an awfully tough team to knock off as you chase the title. Good luck!

 

For South - congrats on a fantastic season! Longest winning streak in South Oldham history (10 consecutive wins), a third straight season with 10 or more wins (school first), and a group of seniors who will graduate after winning 40 games in 4 seasons (a school record.) Quite a legacy.
