Non-smokers get six days extra paid leave to make up for smokers' cigarette breaks

Can I get extra time off to compensate for the number of hours my co-workers gossip in each other's areas?

Bet. I take smoke breaks, but they're 5 minutes at a time. Anybody suggesting 15 minutes to take a smoke break is going a bit far. Even if I went for 2 during a smoke break, it's still less than 10 minutes.

Even at just 15 minutes a day...times 5 days/wk = 1.25 hrs/wk

1.25 hrs/wk x 50 weeks (not counting 2 for vacation) = 62.5 hrs.

62.5 hrs. divided by 8 hr day = 7.81 days

Do those same numbers count if I'm on salary? And if I do a significant chunk of my work at home on my back porch? Because that happens a lot.

Are you allowed to drink Bourbon on your back porch while you are working?

When I go for 2 on a break it doesn't have anything to do with smoking, but I definitely agree on the less than 10 minutes.

What happens on the porch, stays on the porch. :D

Now you're just being dirty-minded. lol

Whatever you do don't go for 2 with the girl in HR. That doesn't end well, ever.

Couldn't help but think of this song with regards to this thread.

...or just let them smoke in the workplace. That problem solved.

My sixth grade teacher came in every morning with a huge mug of coffee and the news paper. She sat down, told us to study for the spelling test, lit a Marboro 100, kicked back, and read the paper. 2 or 3 smokes and an empty coffee mug later, we started the day.

where I work we don't have a "break policy" so to speak. So when I go have a cig its just go outside the shop 2 minutes tops then either back in the shop or to the assigned job. And if the assigned job is outside then I can smoke as im working. 10 min "smoke breaks" seems a bit much to me. Ive had guys I work with say "hey go get ya a cig while I go :poop:" And it taked them more time to take care of their situation than it does for me to have a cig. :lol2:

I don't agree with the policy. Those who abuse smoke breaks should be dealt with accordingly. This whole things seems like it would only further weaken efficiency.

On a side note, smoking is just so vile. It's difficult to work with someone that smells like an ashtray.

I love it! My only concern is that smokers will take more breaks to get their 6 days worth.

I wasn't figuring 15 minutes for a single smoke break. We've got a lady that goes outside easily 3-5 times a day. I just used 15 minutes as the cumulative amount of time she probably spends smoking. Some may be longer, some may be shorter. Was just using a defined number to see what it translated into a total number of hours, and subsequently a number of days, at the end of the year.

I spend more than 15 mins a day on BGP at my job, so no complaints if someone is smoking that long in my world.

I started teaching in 1976 in Dayton, Ky. and smoked in the classroom while teaching 6th graders. In 1977 I went to Kenton County to teach and did not smoke in the classroom. We smoked in the lounge. I don't remember if we weren't allowed or it was just the culture there. No one thought that was unusual at all. When I coached soccer at Dixie from 81-85, I smoked on the sidelines, again no one thought a thing about it.
