BluegrassPreps' Class 3A Rankings - Discussion (10/23)

Teams don't have to lose to drop. Sometimes teams are just playing better football and have higher quality wins that necessitate jumping a team in the poll.

My guess is it is less about Corbin and more about the freight train that is Boyle County right now.

With that said, and if you needed to make an argument. Casey County and Western Hills were pretty equally paired teams entering last week.

One got wiped off the face of the planet, the other was right in the game until they self destructed in the 4th Quarter.

Fair point

That is a great point. Casey vs Western Hills would likely be a very close game.

I would not be surprised to see Boyle win the whole darn thing. They may be playing the best ball of anyone right now. I've had them at #2 for three weeks. They may be claiming #1 before long.

A lot of talk on here regarding Boyle Co. Is the consensus that Boyle has moved into the "favorite" position to win 3A? Just curious as to everyone's thoughts.

Guessing Belfry and Corbin are curious as well :)

They have moved into co-favorite status IMHO. I think they have the best path to the Finals as well.

Belfry has to go to Central and then have to beat Corbin.

Corbin has to go to Belfry and beat the Pirates.

Boyle should win their region with relative ease and only have the Caldwell/Etown winner on the road. Not an easy game by any means, but not as hard of a draw as what the Eastern teams will see most likely in the Semi's.

This week will tell us if they are the favorite or not. Wayne County is now the #1 team in 4A and Boyle destroyed them. If Belfry doesn't impress against Johnson Central I think it is safe to call Boyle the favorite entering November.

Boyle is playing the best football of any 3A team right now. They have given everyone something to talk about and showing that they are one of the favorites in 3A right now. But to me Belfry is the favorite until someone beats them.

The Belfry/Central winner will be tough to beat

Agreed. To come away from Louisville with a win over Central would carry more weight than a win over E-town I think. And if Central were to win how could they not be the favorite. Boyles path of slightly less resistance would still be challenging but not as competitive as the East. But E-town will certainly be a big obstacle for the Rebels to overcome.

It's going to be an interesting next six weeks. Still a lot of football left to be played....

To be fair..

Belfry has an argument that they are playing the best football as well... but with one large caveat.

Boyle is beating pretty solid teams with winning records.

Belfry, with the exception of an ultra impressive win over Cabell Midland, is beating the brakes off mediocre competition that they are being obligated to play.

The past five games Belfry has outscored their opposition 253- 35 (50-7 average score).. Boyle has defeated their last five 268-65 (54-13 average score).

Both teams have racked up running clocks and seen garbage time points scored on them that kept those scores from being even more outrageous

Which brings me back to this week's Belfry vs. Johnson Central game. How Belfry performs will speak volumes... that would be two signature wins down the stretch which says much more about Belfry than blowout wins where their offense only runs 15 plays against teams who won't make it past the First Round.

Boyle Co. beat Wayne Co. pretty good, but the offensive stats were very close. Wayne Co. turned it over 4 times though and Boyle didn't have any turnovers, plus Boyle shut down Wayne's running game, which were the two biggest factors in the outcome. Wayne also struggled with Pulaski Co., which surprised me more than this score.

@ALTCat you are probably right on Belfry because when it comes to them you are the Man. I just have not gotten to see them play and just know that they are really good. Of the 65 points that Boyle has given up, about 21-28 of those points have been scored on their 2nd and 3rd teams players. That may also go for the 35 that Belfry has given up.

I saw Belfry and Boyle play on back to back weeks earlier this month. In my personal opinion, I thought Belfry was slightly better. However, Boyle seems to be getting exponentially better each week. I think it is probably a coin flip between the two. I'm glad any potential matchup would be at a neutral site instead of either team's home field.

Belfry is the favorite until someone does something about it. They have completely dominated 3A for years. No reason to think that changes...yet.
