Rose Hill did nothing wrong , neither did the kids ... If anything they brought the public versus private school issue into our backyard and alot of people didn't like it ...

You are wrong. Rose Hill was placed on probation for 2 years and fined $1,000by the KHSAA stemming from an incident that involved a RH administrator providing housing to a player and his family.

I agree. He sure degraded the Rock in the Regional Finals last season.

That is absolutely right, That is the way it should be if an announcer dosen't have a real passion for his team or the skill to put it into words it will show! We are very fortunate to have a crew that BLEEDS MAROON & WHITE!

I heard those comments also. Great history of broadcasting high school games for a father & son.

I am so glad that I was not added to this thread. It is hard to not be a bit of a homer because the audience is from your community that you love and live in most of the time. You can show a bit of bias and still not sound like a homer though. After some of the seasons I have been through with the Bath County Wildcats you get used to talking good about the other team. You still try to make the game interesting.

I have listened to your calls Radioboy74 & I must say you do a fine job. Your Wildcats are certainly giving you plenty to talk about this season. I'll be dialing in Friday to hear your play by play while watching the game. Keep up the good work.

Dickie catches a lot of flack but he really is one of the best in the biz.

 

Listen to him call a game and count how many times you hear him make a mistake. It won't be many I can tell you that.

 

It must be a radio thing but I will listen for a PBP or color guy contradict him self. This rarely happens with Dickie.

I have listen to many radio broadcast through the years....from the NFL to High School. To some extent they are all a bit "homer" in my opinion. I think it's some what apart of the job.

I do agree that some are worse than others.

RP, I don't agree with you on X's broadcast when it comes to Spears and Birk.

Being for the team or supporting the team does not make one a "homer". I guess we have to define what "homer" really means.

 

In my opinion, a Homer does the following:

 

-gives a biased view of the game by doing such things as blaming the officials for his team losing when they are actually being outplayed.

 

-lets his emotions get carried away by getting so excited with a big play by his team that one can hardly understand what is happening or acting really depressed when the other team makes a big play. I can always tell which team is winning even without knowing the score when I listen to a homer.

 

-shows little interest in the names of opposing players and refuses to give credit, when due, to the opposing team.

 

-makes snide comments against opponents (players and/or coaches) or the opponent's facilities.

 

I think a color commentator can get away with some "homerisms", especially if he is a former coach (like Mayfied's color guy) or if he is a former player. In my experience, the most informative and entertaining football broadcasts come from the play-by-play announcer being fair and balanced and avoiding the taboo (to me) words "me, we and us" when describing the team.

 

I have said this many times on here, and it bears repeating in light of several games I have listened to recently by way of the internet, please give the score of the game. Once you think you have given the score too much, you are getting close to having given it enough. And, please give the down and distance and line of scrimmage on every play.

Thanks and I agree that the Cats are giving plenty of good thing to talk about. I read the post a few ago talking about making mistakes unless you have headphones on at the game you should never know that we make a mistake. I have made up names and recreated plays because of fast timeouts and the listener is none the wiser.
