UKCATSFAN, that is how he sees the game. Dickie is a good guy. He would give you the shirt off his back and would tell you how it is too. He loves Ashland, just like everyone else loves their home and team. Like its been said, you either love him or hate him, but you cant argue where his loyalties lie or that hes the best there is.

I'm not arguing about his play-by-play skills. Well actually, I'm not arguing about anything. I just stated what I believe most people outside of Ashland think about Dickie. As a announcer, your job is to announce the game and to give an accurate account of events during the game and the truly great ones do it objectively. They may be pulling for a team and they may let that be known throughout the game but they can still announce the game objectively. They can separate themselves from the fan within themselves and give the listener non-bias objective account of things that take place on the field. I'm not saying that Dickie does this all the time either. Sometimes I think he has a hard time separating the fan and the announcer within himself. I think that's was keeps him from being an elite announcer because when he gives his bias account of things listeners get an incorrect account of the game. His play-by-play skills are phenomenal, I don't think anyone disagrees with that. He paints a picture of the game in ones mind which not too many announcers can do. He's very,very imformative and rarely do you not know what's happening on the field. But like I said, if he could separate the fan and the announcer within he would be in a league all by himself. Sometimes I think it hampers his ability to give an accurate account of the game. I think Dickie is a tremendous announcer and any school would be lucky to have him. This is in no way an insult or bashing of Dickie because I truly respect him for the job he does and the person everyone says he is. It is just my opinion of him sometimes, that's all.

Not for sure about radio guys, but the Williamsburg game anouncer falls into that class. Was very upset two years ago how he handles himself being a game anouncer.

I'm sure you are. Any school would be lucky to have an announcer of his caliber.

No one on here argues that Dickie Martin doesnt do a good job a announcing the Tomcats ballgames, BUT he is very degrading against the teams that Ashland plays. I remember last year, him saying that Johnson Central was a dirty team and hollering how they take alot of cheap shots and calling Coach Matney a hot head. He is far to biased about his Tomcats.

Dickie Martin wins the award...but he is also very good.

He would be great if he weren't so degrading to opposing teams.

I am so glad that I was not added to this thread. It is hard to not be a bit of a homer because the audience is from your community that you love and live in most of the time. You can show a bit of bias and still not sound like a homer though. After some of the seasons I have been through with the Bath County Wildcats you get used to talking good about the other team. You still try to make the game interesting.

Listen everyone on here is a "homer" for their team, nothing wrong with that. Don't get on these guys for being just like you, except they have a platform to broadcast their thoughts and feeling from.

Nothing is wrong with it. Some on-air guys just get carried away and see no wrong. Some are great, some are not so great. Some are fun to listen to, some make you want to tear your ears off your head and flush them down the toliet. We do the same thing on here, you're right. We were just seeing who's just doing their job. Nobody has really "got on to" anyone that I can see. It's even drawn attention to some on air personalities. I had never even heard of Dickie Martin, but now I'd like to hear what the guy has to say.

Hey, anyway, we at Lynn Camp would love to have a full time radio guy, homer or not. We just have to depend on other stations to provide coverage for us. I really would'nt care if Howard Stern covered us, as long as every game made the radio somehow!

Then would you say it is wrong for all radio announcers and TV hosts to let their audiences know their views?

Views are fine .... an agenda ... repeatedly is not ...

 

Rose Hill did nothing wrong , neither did the kids ... If anything they brought the public versus private school issue into our backyard and alot of people didn't like it ...

Those ARE his views. He still to this day thinks Rose Hill did things the wrong way. But, this issue has been beat to death. At least we agree he is the best around here. :thumb:

I don't tihink anyone is getting on them. At least I'm not. I think radio announcers should be "homer" and should root for their respected team. I also think Dickie is the best radio guy around. I was just stating that sometimes a bias view can give an incorrect account of what happens on the field. Again, I was not bashing Dickie in anyway what so ever.I greatly respect Dickie and job he does and any school would be lucky to have him. And admit it or not, any school would LOVE to have him on their radio station.
