St Anthony's (NJ) Closing Its Doors

Featured Replies

That's a pretty big deal, hate to hear it.

I hate to see a party of NYC hoops history shut down. I know Hurley has worked tirelessly to keep the school afloat but you can only go to the well so often. Who was their last pro?

Just more proof that Im getting old......Didnt St Anthony come to Rupp back when they had that classic long ago

That place is a known "powerhouse" for high school basketball isn't it? You would think they would have produced a few pro's that would give back to the school. I did not read the article so maybe they did and just aren't willing to give anymore, but what a shame.

You would think that a big company or shoe company would want to step in and "sponsor" the whole school to keep the doors open if that is even possible to be done.

What I heard is that they need money AND students.

Owed $1.2 million to the ArchDiocese. Couldn't even get 200 kids... maybe it will be good for basketball in NJ because 27 state titles doesn't even sound fair.

The statement that one of the reasons the school was in its current shape was "the charter schools that gobbled up students" caught my attention. I wonder if something similar will happen in Kentucky.

Very sad to hear and read this. I would love to see some numbers on the students who were 'lost' to the charter schools as well. Is that the only reason the student base declined so much? Sorry for Coach Hurley, and I am sure there are others, who put so much blood, sweat, and tears into keeping the school going. But hey, maybe he can move to NKY and be an assistant coach under his old assistant at Cov Cath! :D

Why do students want to go to an old run down building when they can go to new schools in new buildings with state of the art teaching?

This has been coming, was just a matter of when. They have been struggling for a while now.
