Here is Jumper_Dad's short form immigration plan.

 

1. Do everything possible to stop illegals from entering the country...maybe even build a wall.

 

2. Deport every convicted criminal that is here illegally, after they serve their sentence for their crime.

 

3. Zero tolerance on corporations hiring illegals, if they don't have verified I-9's for every employee they will be fined heavily.

3a. CEO held ultimately responsible...Jail time possible.

 

4. Small businesses (restaurants, builders, farmers and such) would have a year to get clearance for any non-criminal illegals they have working for them. (If they are working and have NO criminal record they have a chance to stay, by coming clean.)

4a. All employees would be paid AT LEAST the prevailing Minimum wage.

4b. Small business would now be held to the same I-9 compliance that large corporations are.

4c. Federal reporting on all wages paid and corresponding taxes withheld.

 

5. Illegals with small business clearance would be able to receive near immediate work Visas.

 

6. Removing federal funding from Sanctuary cities until they are compliant with Federal Immigration laws.

 

7. Require a valid ID to wire money out of the country.

 

I have some more thoughts but that's off the top of my head.

I agree with Jumper Dad. I would add that anyone with a job and clean record be given work visas and their family guest visas. Path to citizenship should be at the end of the line. This gets the stable families out in the open.

I'm on board with this.

Fine employers and you won't have to deport anybody. They'll go back on their own, but get ready like Jim said earlier there will be unintended consequences.

That problem isn't that straight forward obviously. For instance, I had a contractor insulate my home with spray in insulation. He had 5 Mexican men working for him. So, I asked him why he didn't have any legals working. He told me very flatly, he had to advertise for 2 weeks in the local paper. Not one single applicant. Told me directly that the population in his county wasn't interested in working for fear of affecting their draw. He was left no choice but to hire illegals (which was legal after posting his job for 2 weeks). So, does that guy need fined?

Sure, but there has to be a means of checks and balance for that process. But if there aren't any willing/able workers, what do you expect small businesses to do? Serious question. I follow your logic in your post above, and don't disagree with it for the most part. Work visas could easily be a work around.

I know it's off topic, but advertising in the paper isn't going to get you many applicants anymore. And people in fear of losing their "draw" doesn't make much sense either...I'm guessing if he had illegals working for him he's probably paying them on a less than up and up method. His "excuses" sound pretty fishy to me.

What has been quoted is partly incorrect. There is NO plan that allows hiring of illegals. There are 2 plans that allow for getting work visas for people from Mexico legally, H-2 (construction, landscape, etc) and H-2A for farm work. There are lots of hoops to jump through but one is you MUST advertise in your local paper for two weeks and you must hire any US citizen before you are allowed to apply for visas for migrant workers. H-2A has become the major source of labor for farm work in KY.

In seriousness, in the early 2000s several local farmers were forced to contract workers that were not legal. I worked about 3 summers in tobacco, hay, and tomatoes with migrant workers who were just here to make a buck. The reason was exactly what you said Spin.

 

Those crops would have never been harvested without those migrant workers, BUT I'm ready for this nation to get back to work. Many of the folks who wouldn't stand in the top of a barn voted for Trump and his hardline stance on immigration. Can't wait to see what happens when at the least they have to raise their own garden.

I keep trying to point out that illegals have filled a need. The whole "they're taking our jobs" is really, really a gross exaggeration, if not an out and out lie to keep people stirred up. There are thousands of jobs out there that legal Americans simply refuse to do. And that won't change even if the government could identify and deport every illegal in the country.
