I don't care for the concept either, but as was mentioned previously, I'd like to see business profiting off cheap illegal immigrant labor to be fined heavily for their role in it. I mean, if that's the route we're going to take. I don't like the idea of my produce prices going up 500 percent, though, and that is just one of the unintended consequences of a harsh crackdown on illegal aliens. Construction costs, what you pay at a restaurant for your food — not just on the produce end, but also the labor that cooks the food. Could also result in the death of the horse racing industry.

I agree that businesses that hire illegals should be punished...but I think illegals should be deported if found. What I don't understand is when I hear people say that illegals who are here contributing to society by working should be able to have a path to citizenship? How can that be? If the company that is employing the illegal should be punished, how can the illegal immigrant be allowed to have the job? It seems inconsistent to me.

I feel some sympathy for small business owners who have been forced to hire illegals to remain in business. If you are a construction subcontractor, for example, and your competitors start underbidding you consistently because they are using cheap labor, then you may face a choice of following suit or going out of business.

 

Both parties deserve blame for creating the current situation. Democrats have pushed for open borders because they believe illegal aliens will become future Democrat voters. Many Republicans have supported open border policies at the behest of organizations like the National Chamber of Commerce for cheap labor.

 

I support fining business owners for employing illegals, but there needs to be some leniency shown until the federal government gets control of our borders. Small business owners should not be punished unfairly for the screw-ups of the federal government.

Fine employers and you won't have to deport anybody. They'll go back on their own, but get ready like Jim said earlier there will be unintended consequences.
