Belfry vs. Pikeville

I was afraid this might have been thought by some to be the case; let me explain...

We'd bought new away jerseys for our team last year and had kept them a surprise from our guys. When we got there, we had to SNEAK the jerseys in on hangers to the locker room without any of the players knowing. So, I had to get them as far away from our locker room as possible AND facing the other way while they were "trojan horsed" in.

To do that, I sent them down to the other end of the stadium and talked to them with them facing me (so I could see exactly when our jerseys were all in the locker room).

What's ironic, is that some thought we were trying to INTIMIDATE Belfry -- 2 time state champ -- while down there; when the basis of my talk with them was REALLY about how IMPRESSIVE their program was ("just look at this complex, look at their indoor workout area and locker rooms here, etc. To win HERE would mean so much more...to be the best, you have to BEAT the best").

There was no attempt or instruction to "stare down" any of their players, stomp on any kind of logo (none of our players were positioned in their endzone even during the talk).

It is LAUGHABLE that a coach would be STUPID enough to come into the stadium of a POWERHOUSE with a TREMENDOUSLY respected head coach and a community that loves and respects the game and try to somehow "intimidate" them as a 3 or 4 TD underdog.

I've done some dumb things before, but trying to INTIMIDATE Belfry at THEIR place, sorry. Trust me, I/we have nothing but ABSOLUTE RESPECT for what's been done at Belfry and would NEVER disrespect a great program that does things the right way like that. (But I know how fun CONSPIRACY THEORIES are to some; so I'm sure the beat will go on).

As for THIS year's game, looks like both teams are improving and both are close to full strength...ought to be a great night of football in the mountains!

Sounds legit to me.......Sounded like a good idea, too.

Good luck to ya Coach.......It really should be a dandy of a game.

Belfry has too many big strong athletic kids. Pikeville will lose the LOS like they have for the past FIVE years.

I honestly believe Belfry can play a semi-sloppy game and win. If they play well and don't turn the ball over the should win in decisive fashion.

Pikeville's only chance is to score on a couple big plays and hope Belfry fumbles all night long.

I hope Belfry has this same attitude! With this type of attitude Belfry will be in for a big surprise!!!

I doubt that is the message our coaching staff is sending to our players.

Belfry won't be looking past Pikeville, they will be prepared for a tough game and they will have to play well to win it.

Belfry - 28

Pikeville - 21

The biggest questions around this game are:

1. Will Mayo play? If he does play...how long will it take to knock the rust off?

2. Can Pikeville consistenly open holes for Harmon?

3. Can Belfry's pass defense control/contain the TE?

4. Can Pikeville control the LOS and contain May/Chapman/Epling?

IMO, with a healthy Mayo...this is a pick'em game...probably favoring Pikeville since it's at Hambley. However, without Mayo...I just don't see the Panthers as having enough consistency on the offensive end to beat Belfry.

1. Mayo will not play.

2. Consistantly, no.

3. Uhhh, Yes.

4. Control LOS, NO

Contain the rushing trio, NO

PantherDad,

I doubt seriously the coaching staff feels the same as me, nor the players. They are preparing like Pikeville is Ironton or Russell I'm sure.

Still, I think my analysis will hold true. Belfry may not have the explosiveness of past teams, but they can still take it the distance. If I remember correctly, Corey Chapman broke off some LONG runs and outpaced the SAME Honakers, etc that will play this Friday.

It was pretty shocking how large the holes were last season for Pirate backs. Pikeville will have to play much better on the LOS and tackle better than last season.

I believe Pikeville is improve offensively, especially in the running game. That being said, Belfry will be running fresh body after fresh body in the game all night long on defense. This is the deepest Pirate defense I have seen in a LONG time.

Pikeville better be VERY well conditioned. I would be surprised if the Belfry running game is shut down. IMO Pikeville needs to play as solid as possible and hope for a turnover by one of the Pirate backs. Barring such turnovers, I foresee the Big Red Machine simply grinding the valiant but overmatched Panthers into the pretty artificial turf as the game wears on.

Just one man's prediction. Take it for what you will.

I hope Belfry has this same attitude! With this type of attitude Belfry will be in for a big surprise!!!

I don't think they'll be any surprises come Friday night. Both teams are well scouted...and both will be prepared. I highly doubt the Pirates will be looking past P-ville.

I made my post @ 3 and not one person has commented.

I expected better from a Pikeville v. Belfry thread. Maybe the 5 victories in a row have tempered this once hot rivalry?

No it's just that nobody really cares what you say, CFJ. :D

Just Kidding ;) (a couple of us care) :D

I think you have convinced everyone that all Belfry has to do is show up to win.

A valid question that I think needs to be answered, and definately not intended to be a tongue in cheek comment:

What about this Pikeville team will be able to change the disparity that has been present between these two teams over the past 5 years?

Keep in mind that Belfry took the Panthers to the ole woodshed last year and returned quite a bit of talent...... what will make up that difference this year?
