Garoppolo to Cleveland?

Featured Replies

Jimmy Garoppolo is coming to the end of his contract. Tom Brady is 40 years old but seems like he is as capable as ever of playing a few more seasons.

I think it will take a lot of money to keep Garappolo in New England. I doubt Belichick is willing to pay top dollar for a backup. If Brady doesn't retire after a Superbowl win (hypothetical) then I think Garoppolo will wind up elsewhere.

It seems to me that if NE will lose Garopollo, they will do it by trade so that they get something for him. That sets up a bidding war among several teams that need a QB. Two of those who will be in contention for him are Cleveland and San Francisco. Kyle Shanahan will be the new HC of the Niners and when he was in Cleveland, he reportedly liked Garoppolo who was coming out of Eastern Ill at the time. Ultimately, the Browns chose Manziel but it was reported then that Shanahan and QB coach Dowell Loggains preferred others to Manziel including Garoppolo. Loggains now runs the offense for Chicago who is also looking for a QB and they have the #3 pick. The Niners have the #2 pick, the Browns have the #1 pick. That sets up three teams with the top three picks who are all looking for a QB. Belichick likes to be in such a situation.

I think Garoppolo could land in Cleveland for several reasons. First, I don't think that any QB available in the draft is a top ten pick. Second, the Browns not only have the #1 pick, they also have the #12 and the #33 (first in the 2nd round). They have a ton of cap room, even with the signing of former NE Linebacker Collins. If the Browns really want Garoppolo, they have the ammunition to get him. However, I don't think they will give up a #1 to do so. They are more likely to offer the #12 and some other later round draft picks for a trade. A lot will depend on how they grade out the current class of QBs in this draft. Third, Garoppolo has an advantage over the QBs in the draft in that he has played in the NFL. He did very well in the two starts this season. He has NFL tape showing he can play.

Two things mitigate against Cleveland getting Garappolo. First, Brady is near retirement so why would Belichick trade away his future starter? But I think the salary that they will have to pay Garoppolo in his next contract makes him expendable (in Bill's eyes) and his trade value is high. Second, Shanahan will be hot to get Garoppolo for the Niners. Again, Cleveland has more ammunition to get him if they really want him.

So, while NE fans are thinking about the upcoming Superbowl and Brady's legacy, us Browns fans are left wondering about whether our team can get another cast-off from the Patriots who will help us turn this runaway train around. :lol2:

So, what do you think? Will NE trade Jimmy Garoppolo? What chance does Cleveland have at getting him? Will he be a winning QB in this league once given a chance to start?

It doesn't matter who is quarterbacking Cleveland right now. You have to be able to keep whoever is back there upright. For what it's worth, Cody Kessler had a good few games with the Browns and could (I said could) be their future QB, but again, you have to build an offensive line that can protect him. Right now, it's just not there.

This close to the end of Brady's career, I think you pay Garoppolo. Did you notice how quickly Peyton Manning both declined and became injury prone?

To be fair none of that other stuff started happening until he has the almost career ending nerve damage in his neck.

I hope so. Bleed the Browns of the #12 and #33 picks.

What do see as Garoppolo's future as a QB in the NFL? Can he be a consistent winner, a playoff winner? Be part of an offense that can get to the Superbowl if other pieces are there?

As has been noted by @statman, the Browns are many pieces away. If their line gets healthy, and can add one or two guys, the O-Line could be a strength. The departure of Mack and Schwartz hurt last year. Need a true #1 at receiver and a QB and they will start winning games (assuming the Defense is also improving.

BTW, @statman, I'm not sold on Kessler being more than a backup. I do agree, it isn't fair to judge him because of what he had to work with as the season wore on.

Cleveland is the graveyard for NFL quarterbacks. I'd rather continue to be Brady's understudy.

I think it would be a bad move for Cleveland so I am all for it.

I want Jimmy G to be Brady's replacement. I think he's going to be a very good QB in the league. I just don't see that happening if he's in Cleveland though. The organization is a disaster from top to bottom, so if they'd be willing to give up two top 33 picks for him, let's do it.

Well, if you put it that way, Jimmy G is available again in 2 years. However, no QB has proven to be productive after a Cleveland stint.

Garoppolo gets the "franchise tag" so that the Pats have him for one more year and they can now trade him and get something worthwhile.

I know they need a QB, but would you really give up the 12th and 33rd pick for him?

Cleveland needs players...more than just a qb. Keep the draft picks, or maybe package the #3 to someone with a lower first round pick packaged with a mid-late second round and a fourth round, something like that if there are takers out there willing to do it...something to get guys in there to build on and get some depth. Of course, those picks need to be solid picks too, something Cleveland has shown they can't do recently. As said above, got to have guys keeping the qb upright...build from the inside out. O-line and d-line, fill those needs first and go out from there. So many teams try to get that franchise qb only for him to go to waste because they don't have anything to surround him with and can't keep him upright.

The only way they would be able to trade him is if they franchise him. They ain;t doing that for a back up QB. He is a Free Agent and probably go the highest bidder. It would be nice to be Jimmy right now. He holds all the cards.
