Private Vs. Public (Not such a big deal in Kentucky?)

Featured Replies

Until the privates become a dominant in basketball as they have been in 6A football, (and at times middle classes i.e. LexCath, OCath etc) it will not be a topic that gets addressed although it will always be a hot topic.

Private schools do have an advantage. (They do but its not what you are saying)From the way they can assign and pay their coaches to the they can draw players from unassigned boundaries. (Publics can do all of that too and with no tuition, which is to their advantage) (Please note I said draw & not Recruit, many kids & parents seek opportunity to attend private schools). T & X with their size make it nearly impossible to make a purely Private Class. If I were at LCA for instance, I would not like the idea of facing T for a shot State Title.

Now back to my original point, let the private schools reach dominant status in basketball & it will be addressed. Just my honest opinion. No disrespect meant to anyone.

The advantage private schools have is not what you think.

I have never heard of vouchers in Kentucky. I used to think athletes choosing to go to private schools was about winning High School games and championships. Over time, I concluded that the real motivation is recruiting exposure. I don't believe any athlete or parent can be faulted for this kind of decision.

I assume the above refers strictly to football, correct?

NCF, you've been on BGP for 16 years. Surely you've read the public v. Private debates in that time span.

Not if E Kennesaw Community College was playing W Fremont State.

The only problem with your logic is that many public schools allow kids from outside their district to attend.

I have, but like I said it does not seem to be the problem in Kentucky as it is in Ohio.

I have always wondered why that is.

Nowhere near the # of private schools and only 2 have power..really. in Ohio, it seems, each major city has 4 or 5 high level private schools.

Good points being made above. One other comment - IMO the vast majority of kids who attend privates do so for religious/school environment reasons first and foremost. That, plus the fact that a student in Kentucky can choose to attend any high school they want (public or private) with some exceptions make it more of a non issue in KY for the large majority.

Agreed . A very large majority of kids who attend Catholic school in NKY attended in grade school as well.

It was addressed a few years back, the delegates voted overwhelmingly to split public/private sport championships and it was vetoed by the board of control right back to what it is now.

I would have hated to see that.

Except for the other 6a publics.

It looks like the Private sector has gone after 2A now...6 of the final 8 this year were private schools.

Ok, let's look at where the private 2A schools were located. 2 in NKY, 2 in Louisville, one in Owensboro, one in Lexington. NONE of those schools are choice A when you are looking for a scholarship in that area. Nobody is being recruited to go to those schools. Why would you go to Holy Cross when you could go to CovCath? Why pick my Breds when you could be a Bird?

This isn't Ohio where going to a private school leads to bigger opportunities. The places that these privates are in have public options that are just as good if not better.

I am with you mex. I think program has limited impact on whether a kid gets a D1 scholarship in this day and age. Derek Barnes played for 2A Cov. Holy Cross, who has been terrible the last couple of years before this past season. Despite playing for a losing team playing a weak schedule Barnes had a D1 scholarship before the season even started.

You are correct, how naive of myself to think these places don't recruit.

How in the world do other colleges besides Alabama, Clemson, OSU ect ever get kids to come to their school... let alone sometimes even beat them on a recruit....

There are public schools that recruit and there are private schools that recruit...I just found it interesting that 6 out of 8 2A schools in the regional finals were private, and now that you mention it...2 in Louisville (biggest population in the state), (1 in Lex 2nd biggest), 2 in Northern KY (Greater Cincy Area which is arguably the largest) and 1 in Owensboro which is 4th or 5th largest city in state...

I just don't get what people don't understand about not splitting privates and publics in KY (when these conversations come up). There are just so few sports participating privates in KY it just doesn't make logical or logistical sense to do it. Point black.
