January 5, 20179 yr There are just so few sports participating privates in KY it just doesn't make logical or logistical sense to do it. Point black. So few participating, but yet private schools dominate in several girls sports. And I agree with whoever said nothing gets addressed unless it affects basketball.
January 5, 20179 yr You are correct, how naive of myself to think these places don't recruit. How in the world do other colleges besides Alabama, Clemson, OSU ect ever get kids to come to their school... let alone sometimes even beat them on a recruit.... There are public schools that recruit and there are private schools that recruit...I just found it interesting that 6 out of 8 2A schools in the regional finals were private, and now that you mention it...2 in Louisville (biggest population in the state), (1 in Lex 2nd biggest), 2 in Northern KY (Greater Cincy Area which is arguably the largest) and 1 in Owensboro which is 4th or 5th largest city in state... All private schools technically recruit students who willingly pay tuition because if they did not they would have 0 students attending. There are no students who are designated to go there for free like in a public school system. So yes the star girl basketball player, the boy who works the lights in the school play, the stud running back, the girl who scored a 36 on the ACT, and the boy who got straight Cs and did not participate in any school activities because he worked after school to afford tuition .....they were all recruited.
January 6, 20179 yr What is the difference between vouchers and open enrollment? Vouchers are state dollars that can be applied by parents towards paying tuition at a private school. Some states have then as a promotion of school choice, KY does not. Open enrollment simply means that any student can apply to go to any school as is the case in Jefferson County. All schools have a resides district that is your "default" school based on where you live but you can apply to any school in the county. Each has their own criteria for enrollment and some even have waiting lists.

And I know in the past many in the KY legislature have fought tooth and nail to make sure KY doesn't have charter schools or a voucher system.

This simply isn't true with Catholic schools in a very large Catholic community like NKY. Generations of families go to Catholic schools either the same one or the one closest geographically. People forget the reason even why Catholic schools exisit.

It is still true that all those students are recruited. Heck I think it is a requirement at NCC that a student has to have at least 5 aunts or uncles and 6 cousins and a parent who went there. They are the recruiters of that student.

January 7, 20179 yr And I know in the past many in the KY legislature have fought tooth and nail to make sure KY doesn't have charter schools or a voucher system. Hopefully at least the charter school part may change with this legislature.
January 7, 20179 yr I don't know if your being sarcastic or attempting to make the worst argument ever made on this site ? It is just part of the culture of a private school. I believe it was last year or the year before (ask Lawnboy) the NCC b-ball team had 4 grandsons (all cousins) of an alum on the floor at the same time. Of course at least one of their parents was also an alum.

The only way it remotely makes sense is if you think public schools own kids. Which I'm not a fan of the government controlling anyone. I would venture to say 90% or more of all Catholic students in NKY are 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation Catholic school students.

Duh that is what I said. Their families recruit their sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, grandkids, cousins to attend a Catholic school like they did. That is how most private schools fill the school with students. Someone in the family went there and they want that student to go there. Go thru any private school and the same family names are on the sports teams over and over and over throughout the years.

Many in Louisville have never even heard of Bloody Monday.
January 7, 20179 yr Did your parents recruit you to be American ? Sure did. Remember no one owns anyone. There are alternatives to private schools. Some people choose those alternatives for various reasons. There are plenty of kids in public schools for economic reasons and sometimes that just makes sense in large families. There are plenty of kids in public schools other than the district they reside in for various reasons. No one should have a problem with any family that decides to send a kid to whatever school they choose.
