Private Vs. Public (Not such a big deal in Kentucky?)

Featured Replies

Here in Ohio this seems to be a humongous topic but in Kentucky one seldom hears a word about it. In Ohio there are a handful of schools, who use the voucher program to the fullest and they almost always seem to be a contender in football. Is this not the case in the bluegrass state?

I have never heard of vouchers in Kentucky. I used to think athletes choosing to go to private schools was about winning High School games and championships. Over time, I concluded that the real motivation is recruiting exposure. I don't believe any athlete or parent can be faulted for this kind of decision.

NCF, you've been on BGP for 16 years. Surely you've read the public v. Private debates in that time span.

I have, but like I said it does not seem to be the problem in Kentucky as it is in Ohio.

I have always wondered why that is.

Going to 6 classes has quieted the noise a lot.

At a guess it's because we have so few football playing privates. Only 14 total. Trinity and St. X are the big two that get most of the talk. Outside of them there are 5-6 strong, but not dominate, teams and the rest are average teams.

And historically privates have only dominated the biggest class. Although other privates have won other classes, publics win often enough that most people don't complain.

Until the privates become a dominant in basketball as they have been in 6A football, (and at times middle classes i.e. LexCath, OCath etc) it will not be a topic that gets addressed although it will always be a hot topic.

Private schools do have an advantage. From the way they can assign and pay their coaches to the they can draw players from unassigned boundaries. (Please note I said draw & not Recruit, many kids & parents seek opportunity to attend private schools). T & X with their size make it nearly impossible to make a purely Private Class. If I were at LCA for instance, I would not like the idea of facing T for a shot State Title.

Now back to my original point, let the private schools reach dominant status in basketball & it will be addressed. Just my honest opinion. No disrespect meant to anyone.

Except for the other 6a publics.

You mean the NKY ones. Considering the fact that 2013 and 2015 were won by publics.

Yes, there have been a few publics but over all trinity has become the mountain of 6a.
