Short version of a solution that I have posted a few times in past.

 

4 Classes

8 Sections per classes

7 teams per section

2 rounds of championships over 6 weeks - sectional and state

Section regular season champ gets week 1 bye, winner of 6/7 game then gets #1 in week 2. Other seadings are 2 v 5, 3 v 4 in week 1.

 

Pros:

 

1) All week 1 games have chance at being competative

2) Winning regular season has real meaning in playoffs.

3) Lowest echelon teams have a competative game in week 1 vs automatic blow out.

4) The most notable potential 'blow out' game would come after a win by lower ranking team.

5) Oh yeah, every team is in playoffs.

 

That's it. Know the cons (4 classes, 6 weeks of playoffs) but mathematically this works and would make the playoffs much more interesting.

Depending on how we define competitive, no solution is going to eliminate lopsided games and you can expect half the games to be non-competitive each round no matter what solution you put out there. It is the nature of the sport.

 

I am not opposed to eliminating a few more teams from football playoffs, but I think it should be as few as possible. The easy solution in my mind is keep everything as is and eliminate the 4 seeds (Only 4 seed to win in round one was PRP). Yes, there might be a handful of teams that are good enough to compete in round one that will not get into the playoffs under that proposal, but it would get rid of the bulk of the lopsided games where it is clear one team has no chance. Anything that eliminates more teams than that is not fair to teams who want to compete in the playoffs and have a chance to win a couple games. As I have posted elsewhere, about 15 first round games each year are won by the lower seeded team. Those teams deserve their chance in the playoffs.

As I have said several times, if football wants every team in like Basketball, Baseball and Soccer does, then football then only wants One State Champion, as Basketball, Baseball and Soccer. You can't have everybody in and then have Six Champions.

KHSAA followed the Coach's Association recommendation on number of classes/playoff format, correct? Not on the KHSAA, but the coaches.

 

Something like that. The football coaches, the member schools, the Supers; all of them are "to blame" for the watered down 6 class product but not the KHSAA unless everyone thinks the KHSAA should dictate everything to the member schools?

TheDeuce, good stuff. Suspect you already have in a spread sheet. If so, any chance to see the differences in 1 vs 4 games, and 2 vs 3 games?

 

Just did a quick check...the average margin in 1A games of #1 vs #4 was 57-5, a whopping 52 point differential, with every game having a running clock. The victory spread of #2 vs #3 narrows to 49-17, a 32 point differential. Could not tell how many had a running clock from final scores (victory margins of 35, 33, 37, 26, 26, 12, 31, 55). It should be noted that 1A had two bye games (#1s Bethlehem and Nicholas both had no opponents willing to opt into a 1 vs 4 beatdown).

I can say this about fan travel. Most don't anymore unless it's close or a rival.

Since new people are discussing the same old issue' date=' something needs to change. It appears that most feel that the playoff system is broken. It took years for college football to change and since the change there has not as much noise anymore about who is the sole national champion. I think the classes should remain but not every team makes the playoffs. KHSAA needs to make a change but the coaches need to push for it. I'm on your side 100%. But some on the other side have some valid points as well.

 

Me and jumper dad go way back on this one! I think our blisters on on typing fingers are still healing from years ago!!

If we stick with 6 classes, I would prefer we only take top two. Or, we go back to four classes and take top 4. But, there is not enough support for that among schools.

Quite frankly, the 6 classes was part of a two prong strategy to keep the KHSAA member schools from open revolt about the private schools (read Trinity/St. X) from winning 4A every year. 6 classes get more teams away from T/X. That, along with the neat region 3-6 playoff juggling (but never Regions 1-2 or 7-8), keeps a public school runner up in play every other year. This approach seems to have taken a lot of the steam of throw the privates out argument.

HAHA! Had a feeling the stats would bring a negative response to our current playoff system. Honestly; The 'old school' part of me wishes we had to 'earn' our way in. Then I look at that six schools that were underdogs and Harlan County v Pulaski that missed by just two points and I say...Let's keep it opened up to all of us. My team got crushed 55-12. Some of us on our team felt like we had an out of mind outside chance to find a way to win.

Here's the deal....Your 0-7 or 0-8 until your not. Do you want to play all these games on paper? If losing is such a big deal why in basketball does the district runner-up (a loser) get to compete in the region games? Why does a 4-16 or an 0-16 soccer team get to participate in the playoffs? You are correct that most of these teams are going to lose and many lose by a wide margin but who cares. It's another Friday night where 80-160 kids are not doing drugs for 3 hours. For the financial argument the home team takes care of the travel and eating for the visiting team. This almost always results in neither team going in the hole. For all of you that say that the top 2 teams should be the only teams that should go to the playoffs would have cost thousands of fans, thousands of players and hundreds of communities a chance to see good football last night. Is this what we want for football? That only half of our teams get to participate the first week of the playoffs. I always notice who says we only need two teams and its almost always a fan of a program that always has success. The statement that "Maybe ___________ Co. should just get better" is one of the craziest things I have ever heard. Look if it was so easy then everyone would be great and we would all be 5-5. That's the beauty of football. It takes 1000 moving parts working together to be a great programs. What only taking 2 teams does is discourage kids, programs who are not consistently good and reinforces the bluebloods of ky football. I believe that recruiting would be worse, and a lot of programs would drop out. You think a 1-4 matchup is bad try watching a district game and resulting non-district game (wk 11) after one of those teams are eliminated from the playoffs in the regular season. Is this what we want our football in this state to be? You would never see a rags to riches story like my school Wayne County who for years was a 3-4 seed. I can guarantee you that NewCath took a BIGTIME loss financially last night. There might have been 20 NewCath students in attendance, Carroll Co. brought a very small contingent of parents and virtually no students. The gate probably didn't even cover what the officials get paid.

 

Home teams in the 1st Round take a huge financial hit IMO.

I would still like to see both 6A and 1A be 16 teams only. Equally divide the teams among the other four classes, and knock out one round of the playoffs.
