As long as winless teams make the playoffs, the conversation is warranted, IMO.

I didn't know the home teams pay for the visiting team's travel. How does that work? A mileage rate set by the state and a per hour rate for the driver set by the state

 

This is right. Home team also pays a per diem for food for opponents.

 

Not a proponent of having 4 from each district go for a lot of the reasons the original poster mentioned, but it's not a good argument to be against it due to cost to traveling team.

KHSAA followed the Coach's Association recommendation on number of classes/playoff format, correct? Not on the KHSAA, but the coaches.

Boone 1-9, hosted...only lost by 7. Pulaski County(8-2) hosted Harlan County(4-6) only won by 2. If we're going to water it down (entering the playoffs) with six divisions, I like that nearly everyone gets a shot. AND I like that everyone gets a shot.

We do it in basketball. No shame there!

Folks....the six class football playoff system in Kentucky is a joke. I am happy some people continue to voice their accurate opinion that it is a joke.

 

Those of you who ridicule the complainers, telling them to "get over it", "quit bringing it up", "live with it", etc. kind of remind me of all of the people who will go to the poll on Tuesday and push the Hillary Clinton for president button, even though they know she and her thieving husband have been documented to be as corrupt as there is, but they will vote for her anyway.

 

I am glad there are some people that still complain.

I actually like 6 classes but just feel only top 2 from each district instead of top 4. Just shortens season by 1 week and will eliminate 90% of those running clocks.

One simple question - why do we have these threads for football and not for all the other sports who also have totally lopsided first round playoff games?

Overall 1 state champ playoff is a horrible idea. 1A school with 30 to 40 kids lining up against 100 kids on some teams? :no:

No other sports are split into 6 classes are they?

 

So two factors seem different.

 

a) 6 classes - and that forces longer travel requirements during season and post season.

 

b) Big teams in terms of # of players. So 2 or 3 busses vs. 1 bus for transportation.

There are always a few exceptions to every rule. No matter where you put the limit, there will always be examples of why it should be different. If we want to follow those exceptions, then let everyone in the playoffs. Don't eliminate anyone.

Since new people are discussing the same old issue, something needs to change. It appears that most feel that the playoff system is broken. It took years for college football to change and since the change there has not as much noise anymore about who is the sole national champion. I think the classes should remain but not every team makes the playoffs. KHSAA needs to make a change but the coaches need to push for it. I don't see that happening because having a coaches' mentality I am going to think that I have a chance to win as opposed to not being in the playoffs at all.

Those aren't the issues people complain about. If every first round game was within a 15 minute drive of the two teams playing, we would see the same number of threads and complaints.

Here's the deal....Your 0-7 or 0-8 until your not. Do you want to play all these games on paper? If losing is such a big deal why in basketball does the district runner-up (a loser) get to compete in the region games? Why does a 4-16 or an 0-16 soccer team get to participate in the playoffs? You are correct that most of these teams are going to lose and many lose by a wide margin but who cares. It's another Friday night where 80-160 kids are not doing drugs for 3 hours. For the financial argument the home team takes care of the travel and eating for the visiting team. This almost always results in neither team going in the hole. For all of you that say that the top 2 teams should be the only teams that should go to the playoffs would have cost thousands of fans, thousands of players and hundreds of communities a chance to see good football last night. Is this what we want for football? That only half of our teams get to participate the first week of the playoffs. I always notice who says we only need two teams and its almost always a fan of a program that always has success. The statement that "Maybe ___________ Co. should just get better" is one of the craziest things I have ever heard. Look if it was so easy then everyone would be great and we would all be 5-5. That's the beauty of football. It takes 1000 moving parts working together to be a great programs. What only taking 2 teams does is discourage kids, programs who are not consistently good and reinforces the bluebloods of ky football. I believe that recruiting would be worse, and a lot of programs would drop out. You think a 1-4 matchup is bad try watching a district game and resulting non-district game (wk 11) after one of those teams are eliminated from the playoffs in the regular season. Is this what we want our football in this state to be? You would never see a rags to riches story like my school Wayne County who for years was a 3-4 seed. All those years they would have been going home, adding more negativity to a program, not getting an extra game to practice for etc. The one fix i would make is that all districts must have 5 teams. This would mean that everyone in the playoffs would have to win at least 1 game. I would NEVER ever eliminate 3 and 4 seeds. Also, who gives a crap if the playoffs take 5 weeks. That is a non issue.
