Each school or conference decides their schedule within established rules, with no interference from the IHSAA for 9 games. The 10th game starts the class tourney run by the IHSAA who determines by blind draw who plays who within geographical boundries. I have simplified, but it is done.

Maybe they should cancel all those regular season games too? Let's just force Boone County to drop football since they've only won 1 game the last 3 years. That's idiotic!

 

I think the difference is you have a choice who you schedule in the regular season with the exception of the district. In the playoffs, the structure forces you to put the worst against the best in a situation where it means something. Yes, you may have a few mismatches in your district, but you're not forcing some of the worst in the state to compete against some of the best in the state very often. In my opinion, that's much different and the khsaa governs that and that's what he's trying to say.

What about the teams that play in tougher districts? Why should Manual or Cooper go home because they were 3 seeds? They won their first round matchups and may win in round 2. Why penalize 3 seeds because of lopsided 1/4 matchups?

 

You have your chance. You know going into the season that you have to finish one or two in your district to advance. If you don't you go home. That's why district games would then mean something again. Win and your in. Lose and you're out. How many times has the SEC had the best 3-4 teams in the country and only 1 got to play for the title. It's life! Take care of business when you have the chance or sit home and watch. America has become a soft nation and afraid to hurt feelings. Get over it! Life isn't fair and the top survive. People will say "don't they deserve an opportunity" or "see, they won their first round game!" I say "create you own opportunity and earn your right to even be involved in a first round game! Quit feeling entitled to even be in the first round game because you played really hard all year and you almost won or you were almost the 2nd best team in your district.

And yet in basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, others(?) the KHSAA not only lets every team into the playoffs, they will allow a team that loses in the playoffs to stay in the playoffs (district runner up). Wow. Talk about entitlement and not wanting to hurt feelings. Talk about getting everyone a trophy. Forget regular season. Forget losing a game in the playoffs. If you can just get to that district championship what happens there doesn't even matter. Why do they even play district championship games in all those other sports? Total waste. Nothing more than allowing teams to get another trophy in the trophy case. Why play district games? Why not take the regular season district games to seed teams and start the real playoffs from there instead of creating lopsided first round district games and district "championship" games that mean nothing?

Why do lopsided results in football bother people more than 21-0 5 inning baseball games? Or 17-0 softball? Or 80-24 basketball games? Or 10-0 soccer? How about a 9-23 basketball team that loses in the district playoffs and gets to go on in the playoffs to the regional? All those things happened in playoffs in other sports. No one apparently cares. But a football team drives an hour and loses 45-7 and the world just ended. All of that makes no sense to me. All of that is so duplicitous.

Need a 4 class system with only 5 teams in each class getting in playoffs with the 1 seed in each class getting a bye.

 

I see your point and it would be the most plausible solution. However, this would be a big set back for small schools. Virtually removes some solid teams out of the chance for a title run based solely on enrollment. As an advocate for small schools, I think the current class system gives us the most even playing field possible. But I do agree with reconfiguring the qualifications for making the playoffs. I don't know what could be done other than awarding byes or going back to inter-district playoffs (which was awful), but I'm all ears if you have something better?

The problem is, they made the decision to let too many teams pass through that elimination process. So in reality, football actually has an advantage over the other sports because they allow four to move on after district elimination and the other sports only allow 2.

The point is I won't debate this with anyone that can't see the difference between football and "every other sport". Bringing up "the other sports" when debating football playoffs is ridiculous in my opinion. That's like saying getting a marriage license should be the same as getting a license to carry a gun. They are both government licenses that follow a government process. Why isn't the process the same??? In this case, they are both khsaa roads to a championship and both khsaa processes. Why aren't they the same? If we were debating the license process in the state of Ky and I was telling you why you have to do certain things to get your gun license, would you bring up marriage licenses and say, "well that's not fair! I don't think it should be different than marriage licenses!" Yes it should! It's different and so is football.

 

Football has a district process to eliminate teams already. It's embedded in the regular season because it can't be done like the other sports. You seem to agree with that.
