You deviated from my hypothetical as Boley wasn't guarding the kid from Mercy so it wasn't the head to head match up I set forth in my comment. In your scenario, sure Mercy throws some random kid to hound Boley defensively, but yes, Boley still better all around player.

 

Please re-read my hypothetical and respond to what I actually said or just move along and hopefully someone will read it and provide some thoughtful analysis.

Yep, that is my point. My kids/players are being hammered about going to college for an education anyway, but I chuckle when I hear about some kids and D1 offers, and I'm like ummm, okay.

If a kid can go head to head with a highly rated player. Shut her down and blow by her and score, seems she is under rated. That would lead someone to believe she has not been playing in the right spots. Is that better? Happens all the time.

I can tell you for certain that just this week I have had several colleges ask me about other players that do not play for a "certain" program in the state. If the kid can play I always help them.( thats a fact. If anyone is in this business only to help them self or program and not all kids they need to get out). Does it help to play for a team that plays the top tourneys? Sure. Where do you think the colleges are? On the side courts? They are on the main courts at the big tourneys where the bigger teams are. The smaller teams do not get those prime spots. So to answer your question, it absolutely helps to play on a EYBL or high level team. That does not mean the players that do not are not good players, just they are not getting seen.

That is perfectly acceptable and I think we already answered it together anyway. I tell parents and players all the time, that you can't just sit back and hope colleges at any level will find you. You have to get out there and go after them, play good competition, etc. If I came across too strong, I apologize.

No problem. I think we for the most part think alike. Some things in life are not fair. This is one of them. Just gotta be smart and beat the system.

I have seen that at times, in one game. College coaches watch these kids week after week going against high level players. Thats how you get a offer. Play against the best week after week and earn it. Not a one time shot. Dont work like that. Talk to anyone that deals with this on girls or boys side. They will tell you the same.

I think that parents want to believe that their kids are going to get a fair, non-politicized opportunity to get that "best" shot. On the other hand, the player may actually be very cool with playing with a bunch of other players in a great team environment where the game is the thing, and not always who's watching who.

 

Either way, now it's "on to school season", where the fun factor is usually high and the parental cost factor goes way down(give me a Little Charlies fund raiser any day over a month of Hotel Rooms and TGIF's in the deep south)...anybody want a pizza kit?

Coaches just don't "scout" very many high school games at all. Most of the time when you see them in high school gyms they are sitting on a certain player that they already have determined they like/want. Really hard for them logistically because they are in the middle of their seasons at the same time...not a whole lot of time to look for new talent. There are a few events you will see them at and actively looking for kids...but usually to play in these events your kid has to be on one of the better high school teams in the state...and even then most of these kids are already "marked" by coaches for one reason or another.
