If I remember correctly he played in the mid 70's and was a very good player.

Refresh my memory...who would have been on that 78 team, starters that is?

 

HC had a really good player in the mid to late 70's...a fellow named List?

 

If my memory is correct, HC 78 team starters were: Randy Ives & John Kennedy at guards, Tom Korman, Jeff Comer, and Barry Buntin.

Hey come on now I've read your post, go back and read them again if need be and tell me you don't have a biased either against SK, or that Holmes was better. Either way you fold it there is something there...

 

I have no bias against SK. I said they were a very good team, just not the best that N KY has ever produced.

 

I do think Holmes 78, 90, and 80's team were the best to come out of N KY.

As I have said twice now, these three teams were voted the best all time in N KY by fans and the media a few years back in a poll conducted by the KY Post.

Somebody help me out here... Im drawing a blank on the stud from that 1990 Holmes team... the name Keith Jennings keeps popping in my head but it doesnt sound right.

Besides Jack Jennings, who graduated in 1988, those Homes teams from 88-90 had the Pouncy boys as well. Some serious talent in covington during that stint.

Best team I saw in my time was Highlands, 1996 I beleive. They had Glaizer, Lorenzen, Smith, and Stegman. That was a really good team. They too lost in the finals against Lou. Eastern. They have to be up there. Watched that finals game. Eastern had a guy who was unstoppable and Highlands looked a little tired after 4 games in three days.

I believe it was 1997 that Highlands lost to Eastern in the finals. Smith and Lorenzen were sophomores that year and Paintsville won the state tournament in 1996. Highlands was great in the late 90's.

I'll throw in the 02-03 St. Henry team as one of the all time best teams in NKY. Probably not the best, but top 10. Lost in first round of sweet 16 by 2 points to eventual champ Mason Co.(Masons closest game of the tourney). They lead until starting center Schmidt hurt his leg. What could of been.

Antwon Brown was on that team....Kevin Eilers was in there...uh...Alfonso and cory pouncy, Anthony Tupman...cant think of others. They were very good teams.

'78 team also had Rick Eckerle, Scott Urlage, Doug Schlarman, Wille Kramer. Jeff Trame graduated that year too, but didn't play.

Just about every loss in the Sweet 16 has a "what could have been" type ending to it. In '04, Cov Cath had a few controversial calls go against them in the semi-finals, where they lost to eventual state champ Warren Central (who pretty much dominated defending champ Mason Co. later that night).

 

In '67, CCH lost on a buzzer beater from halfcourt.

 

In '02, Ryle lost to Warren Central on a controversial charging call made against star Justin Doellman.

 

And the list goes on & on & on.

Thanks Ironlung. I couldn't remember everyone on the '78 HC team. They were loaded with talented seniors and underclassmen.

The best team I ever saw in the 9th region had to be the 78 holmes team. I was at that state tourney along with the 80 and 81 tourneys. SK had a great run and if you go on the premise that they won state and know one else has then you have to say they were the best, but the best team I witnessed was Holmes 78 they had size quickness and they played extremely good together. As for Sk I would put them behind the 80 holmes team as well, as someone has already mentioned SK's team was beaten pretty badly by Holmes in 80.

Can't remember the years but didnt the Hayes brothers play for Holmes back around 90? Lamont and James. Anthony Hughes as well.

Lamont '91, James '92 Chris I believe '94. I remember A Brown from the many camps I attended, probably the best sub 6'0" rebounder I have ever seen, he injured his knee but he could still elevate with the best of them.

I watched that St. Henry team play a lot of games. They were a very good team, but I don't think they were one of the 10 best ever from NKY. The CovCath team from the next year was every bit as good.

 

Both good teams, and I enjoyed watching both of them play a good deal, but hard to imagine either of them in the 10 best.
