uknowho1 Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Who would you guys say is the best team in the history of NKy basketball? There's been some good ones. SK's state championship team, Holmes' 1990 team and Holy Cross' team with Clark and Harney. Any other suggestions?
DoggyDawg Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Holmes from 1976-1978, won the region every year and only lost onw or two games to teams from NKY. The 1978 team lost in the state final against Shelby Co.
BIGZIG Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 The Simon Kenton team has to go down as the greatest IMO because they have the Championship to prove it. The Holmes team that got robbed by the officials who didn't see Shelby Ctys Charles Hurtts hand go up thru the basket to reject the shot that cost them a title would rank right up there. Can anyone go back just a bit further and remember the CCH teams of the mid to late 60's. IMO those teams were some of the best I have seen. Noll, Voskuhl, VonLehman, Berger, Schlomer, Derkson, Fritz, Topmiller along with many more were a pretty impressive bunch. As for the HC team with Clark and Harney I wouldn't even rank them as HC's one or 2 best teams..Again check out their State Tournament teams that they had in about 64 or 65 and again in the early 70's. Those teams would have handled Clark and Harney with ease IMO..

He had a little bit of game to say the least. However, if he had gone to SK and the Palmer(Walton) kid had gone to SK, then they may have had 2 rings. Clark was 6'7" and was a point guard at Tichenor as an 8th grader. He could play with his back to the basket and turn around and face up. I never saw the teams in the 60's play, but I find it hard to believe that those 2 guys would have been stopped with ease.
Tiger1 Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 The Kentucky Post had this same question years ago and was voted on by fans and media writers. The first three teams on the list were from Holmes. 1. Holmes - 1978 team ----Lost in the finals to Shelby County 2. Holmes - 1990 team ----Lost in the finals to Fairdale 3. Holmes - 1980 team ----Lost in the Semi-finals to Owensboro 4. CovCath- 1967 or 68 team ----Lost in the finals to Earlington 5. Holy Cross - 1972 team -----Lost in the Quarterfinals to Bryan Station I don't remember the 6-10 order, but Simon Kenton was somewhere in here.
Ironlung Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 You would have to say 1981 Simon Kenton because they are the only state champ! Those would be followed closely by CovCath's 1967 team and Holmes' 1978 team who should have been state champs too, had they not been screwed! Those two would be followed by the 1965 Holy Cross state runnerups who ran out of gas in the finals because they had to play the 4 games in 48 hours thing and the Holmes 1990 state runnerups who just couldn't quite get by a very talented Fairdale team. Honorable mentions would have to be the '54 Newport team and the '97 Highlands team which were also both state runnerups. I think you have to put a lot of stock in how far a team went in the state tournament to consider them a great TEAM even though other teams may have had more talent. Other great teams I can remember who finished third or lower in the state tournament were: 1980 Holmes which had to play on a Friday night well after midnight and then come back Saturday morning to play the semis. Naturally, they ran out of gas. The 1991 Holy Cross team with Andre McClendon & 4 guards who lost to Tates Creek in the semis, the 1953 NewCath team & the 1955 Newport team which both lost in the third place game.

Saying who would beat who is hard to say, but I'm willing to say that SK has to be ranked first, followed by the teams that got beat in the state finals. I know it takes luck some times to get that far, but you can't argue with results. I would vote the 91 team in front of the 94 team at HC and I'm told the team from the 60's was better than both.
polarbear1994 Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Somebody help me out here... Im drawing a blank on the stud from that 1990 Holmes team... the name Keith Jennings keeps popping in my head but it doesnt sound right.

He was not part of the 90 team that lost in the finals.
ColonelCrazy Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Covington Catholic dominated the region in the late 60's. I believe they won 5 straight regional titles. In '67 (?) they lost to Earlington on a last second shot in the state finals, 52-50. I'd say they're a top 3 team in NKY...

Yep 1967, in Freedom Hall Louisville..... 1st round CovCath beat Paducah Tighman 76/49 Quarterfinals CovCath beat Monticello 66/44 Semifinals CovCath beat Louisville Central 67/56 State Finals Earlington 54 CovCath 53 On a last second shot from about mid court that just nicked the rim and fell into a Earlington player hands and he threw it up and in as the buzzer went off. He was as stunned as the sellout crowd was that the ball didn't bounce far away from under the basket, but it just wasn't suppose to be I guess.

I had always heard that the shot was put up AFTER the buzzer. I wasn't at the game so I can't make my own conclusion. Were you there Old Guy? If so, what's your opinion?
NEERFAN Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 I heard those Mote Hils teams of the 60's were very good. Pat Veep usually is good in these type of discussions, would like to hear him. During my time I'd go with the '90/'91 Holmes they were scary.
Theoldguy Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 I had always heard that the shot was put up AFTER the buzzer. I wasn't at the game so I can't make my own conclusion. Were you there Old Guy? If so, what's your opinion? Yes I was there.....and I gave Mr Tieman my album in 1992 so the school could have it to see what that team had done in each and every game from news clippings from the Cin Enquirer, CJ, and Ky Post accounts of each and every game that year and programs from the AIT, LIT 34th District, 9th Region and state tournament....... The shot that the player took from about mid court was shot prior to the horn, but the day that it happened my heart got in the way of my head and I thought the put back was late, but I really have to say it was good..... as Earlington took home the Trophy and we just went home.... I can truthful tell you I cried......as did many of the CovCath Crazies....and I am proud to see the "with a spirit, that will not die" attitude still alive and doing well 40 years later. It will be 40 years ago this March of 2007 that this game took place... Man has the time flown by...... I have suggested to the CovCath administration that, that tape, and along with many others should be copied onto DVD's and sold to make some money for the replacement of the gym. Games like the Mud Bowl (if there is one) or the other 68 through 71 state tournament games or any of the football games that they have old videos on, could be sold and I imagine could bring in a couple of thousands dollars into the schools pocket by many alums..... of long ago......
BGGreen Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Was the '67 CCH team that lost to Earlington, the Randy Noll, etc. team??
