In 1980 the whole SK team were juniors. Obviously they had not reached their potential. I,m sorry the only state championship EVER ! has to carry some weight. All of these other teams went home LOSERS! All the great players on the afore mentioned teams can travel out to route 17 to see the only state championship trophy. Its as close as they ever got to one.

 

I hear you on the championship thought but there were teams that made it to the finals of the sweet sixteen that probably was a little more talented. They just happened to be in a tournament with better teams. The 1990 Holmes team really stands out.

Simon Kenton has to be the choice. Every other team that has been mentioned, albeit great teams, lost their last game of the season. SK won theirs.

Best team I saw in my time was Highlands, 1996 I beleive. They had Glaizer, Lorenzen, Smith, and Stegman. That was a really good team. They too lost in the finals against Lou. Eastern. They have to be up there. Watched that finals game. Eastern had a guy who was unstoppable and Highlands looked a little tired after 4 games in three days.

I was a soph on the 79 team that featured Vories, Muntis, Fischer, Sullivan, and the Malone cousins. Only won one game at Rupp, but I,d stack that team against anybody along with our coach, he was pretty good:thumb:

Jack Jennings graduated in 89. He was not part of the 90 team that lost in the finals.

Jennings graduated in 1988.

Led team to the Quarterfinals in Louisville and fell to eventual champ Lou. Ballard.

Somebody help me out here... Im drawing a blank on the stud from that 1990 Holmes team... the name Keith Jennings keeps popping in my head but it doesnt sound right.

The senior that led Holmes in 1990 was Anthony Hughes. Hughes had a heckuva a tourney shooting the ball before suffering a cold shooting game versus Fairdale. Primarily a team full of juniors. They beat Clark County in a whale of an game in the semi-finals.

That 90 team flat scored some points...I think they averaged in the mid 80's for the season.

That was a good team...but not likely top 3 or 4 Holmes teams that I saw.

I distinctly remember that 9th Region Final at Holmes. They beat a very good Holmes team. I think Holmes was leading going into the 4th quarter and decided to kill clock and lost some momentum and ultimately the game.

Wasn't Schlarman on that team?

I can vaguely remember sqeezing into Highlands for their regular season game which Holmes won, but Mutis didn't play if I recall correctly.

The best overall team in my lifetime was the 1978 Holmes team.

They had Mr. Basketball in Dough Schloemer, a solid PF in John Wimzie. Athletic center in Tony Malik and Ricky Walton off the bench. A nice 2 guard in Mark Moeves, the father of Pittsburgh Pirate minor leaguer Derek Moeves. In addition they had Dicky Beal, Phil Davis, Mark Elmer, and other contributors like Kevin Sebastian, the father of Ms. Basketball Erica Hallman, Tony Whatley and others.

They lost 2 games all year, both to Shelby County. Once in the LIT finals and Sweet 16 Finals.

What people forget during that 1978 season was how good a team Holy Cross had. If I recall correctly, they had a team of Clay Eifert, Dan Lenihan, and some solid guards in Trame and Kennedy. They had a few others who escape me. I think that HC team only lost 4 or 5 games all year. All of them were to Holmes. Twice during the regular season, once in the old NewCath Invitational, once in the districts...which I believe was in the first round and HC blew a big second half lead. I cant quite remember the 5th game, but it may have just been 4 games.

I remember when he about pierce the roof of Freedom Hall with that missed dunk. That Ballard team wasn't too bad, they only won the title that season.

Schlarman was in 8th grade that year, and was not on the team. He did play the next year as a frosh. He was a big part of the 82 team, with Freddie Terry, and Dave Simons that won that regional.

HC was up by about 13 points with 4 or so minutes to go in that district game I think. This was before the 3 point shot, so the Bulldogs made a tremendous comeback!

Eifert & Lenihan were only sophomores that year with a team with 8 seniors so they didn't play much then.

I agree with 100%. To give an example, SK had a very good team in 81, but in 1980 when they played Holmes, they got smoked by 30+.

 

SK is not the best team to ever play in NKY. As I stated in my previous post, the KY post did this same poll years ago and the fans and media voted on it, and SK was somewhere between 6-10. Holmes had the first three spots.

 

Hey come on now I've read your post, go back and read them again if need be and tell me you don't have a biased either against SK, or that Holmes was better. Either way you fold it there is something there...
