If you take Belfry out of the mix, then Russell becomes the Region favorite in R3 and would set up a Russell / Corbin semifinal that would almost be a certainty.

 

A Russell/Corbin matchup would be a lot of fun.

Corbin rolls in from the east and probably Central from the west...I take Corbin in that match up.

Some sleepers to consider if they get hot at the right time;

Bardstown

Adair County

Union County

Paducah Tilghman- if drama gets resolved and takes advantage of playing of playing a tough non-district schedule.

Out of the east you could almost flip a coin between Russell and Corbin. Corbin would currently be my favorite. On the West side you'll have to roll a dice with the names of Lex Cath, Central, Caldwell Co, Boyle County, Bardstown and Adair Co on it to pick that one.

I personally think Belfry is unbeatable in 3A.

 

There isn't anyone in 1A thru 4A who would could knock them out of the playoffs including themselves. They cannot commit enough turnovers or get enough penalties to lose in the playoffs. It would take a truly catastrophic collapse by them combined with the perfect game from their opponent.

 

Hopefully after this season they might back up to the pack enough for someone to give them a game in 3A over the next 2 seasons of the current alignment.

I see it as the exact opposite.. what made Belfry get to where they are now was playing (and losing) to teams and having to adjust their program's trajectory to meet those standards.

 

By this logic we would only have three quality classes, 2A, 4A, and 6A

 

Any top 1A team would be in 2A leaving mediocrity behind, any top 3A would be in 4A, and any top 5A would be in 6A.

What are you referring too? Belfry is barely 3A....and with the current economic conditions in Eastern KY....I can see them dropping to 2A within the next 2-4 years. They won't be going to 4A anytime in the foreseeable future.....

I knew that would get a rise out of you, if anybody. Here's the truth. You will see that over time teams that stay in classes that are TYPICALLY full of lesser talented schools will become complacent and fall back to the pack if you do not continue to challenge them to get better (this is no different than any other aspect of life). The only way to do this is to make their competition better. Let's take Mayfield for instance. It seems they have had no trouble moving from 1A to 2A, and are a better team for it. You see ATLCat, with this process happening the next hungry team is always coming up through the ranks. There is a cap to it. I would never suggest that Mayfield be moved to 6A, but a move to 3A in 10 years or so may not be out of the question.That could possibly be their cap. Your logic of only 3 quality classes holds no water here. What about the 2A team that has been moved to 3A, or the 4A team that moves up to 5A? Did you forget about those. Caldwell is a top tier 3A school, they too have seemed to have no problem adjusting. Will they always be a top 3A school? Time will tell. Maybe that move was best for them at this time. Maybe 10 or 20 years from now, they need to be a 2A school or a 4A school. You see ATLCat dominating a lower class is not a success, competing at a higher level is. If you move a team up, and 10 years later they have struggles to compete it would be best to move them down. Moving up a class should not be looked at like a punishment, but as an award for excellence. Pushing people to succeed is what it is all about, and rewarding them for such success. Instead, too many are worried about win/loss records and how many state titles the can accumulate. (NOT POINTING ANY FINGERS). Raising the standard for one school raises the standard for all.
