Hypothetical: In 3A, Belfry doesn't exist

Featured Replies

I knew that would get a rise out of you, if anybody. Here's the truth. You will see that over time teams that stay in classes that are TYPICALLY full of lesser talented schools will become complacent and fall back to the pack if you do not continue to challenge them to get better (this is no different than any other aspect of life). The only way to do this is to make their competition better. Let's take Mayfield for instance. It seems they have had no trouble moving from 1A to 2A, and are a better team for it. You see ATLCat, with this process happening the next hungry team is always coming up through the ranks. There is a cap to it. I would never suggest that Mayfield be moved to 6A, but a move to 3A in 10 years or so may not be out of the question. That could possibly be their cap. Your logic of only 3 quality classes holds no water here. What about the 2A team that has been moved to 3A, or the 4A team that moves up to 5A? Did you forget about those. Caldwell is a top tier 3A school, they too have seemed to have no problem adjusting. Will they always be a top 3A school? Time will tell. Maybe that move was best for them at this time. Maybe 10 or 20 years from now, they need to be a 2A school or a 4A school. You see ATLCat dominating a lower class is not a success, competing at a higher level is. If you move a team up, and 10 years later they have struggles to compete it would be best to move them down. Moving up a class should not be looked at like a punishment, but as an award for excellence. Pushing people to succeed is what it is all about, and rewarding them for such success. Instead, too many are worried about win/loss records and how many state titles the can accumulate. (NOT POINTING ANY FINGERS). Raising the standard for one school raises the standard for all.

Last I checked the goal is to win State Championship rings? Until they make a Tournament of Champions a program is going to do what is best to help them win the title. I would rather have a Championship over a lofty Lit Rating any day.

Why would the 2A team go to 3A if 2A is already the more competitive class and the best 3A team is not there? Take a look at this year alone. If Belfry is in 4A Mayfield may have one team in 3A who can compete with them, Corbin (a team they already beat). Meanwhile in 2A they have CAL, DeSales, Danville, etc.. I would argue 2A is tougher than 3A without Belfry so why would Mayfield play up in a watered down 3A when their better competition is already in 2A?

If Bowling Green leaves 5A why would Johnson Central want to play in a watered down 5A when 4A has the better teams this year?

What happens to the lower tier 6A Teams like Dunbar, Muhlenberg County, etc? Do they get the option to play down?

The even numbered classes will be a catch all between the best teams playing up and the good teams wanting to play the best teams and not wanting to move.

Class 1A will basically be the small school have not's. Class 5A will be the big schools who want a participation trophy that dont want to challenger the 6A powerhouses. Class 3A will end up being a collection of teams like Caldwell, Lawrence County, and Garrard County that need everyone playing in other classes so they can finally get over the hump.

I don't agree with your logic but I am intrigued by it.

You see ATLCat dominating a lower class is not a success, competing at a higher level is.
That is a preposterous notion, that competing in your assigned class and winning multiple titles is not success. I think it is the ultimate success.

What is your definition of success? What should we be pushing people to do that would be considered successful so that we can reward them? If it isn't winning records or state titles, then what?

I never thought I would see a Socialist High School Football alignment LOL

And to think it was just a year ago we listened to you constantly singing the praises of nearly every team in the western half of 3A as favorites over any team in the eastern half, including Belfry. To thoughts about how it was unfair all the good teams had to beat up on each other and while Belfry was the best in the east, and would get an easier path to the finals, they were going to get taken to the woodshed in Bowling Green. We all saw how that played out on the field.

Now they are just too good and dominant that they should be forced up in class so everyone else could benefit. Because they are head and shoulders above all the weak sisters in 3A, that their recent dominance should not be considered a success.

Hilarious, but entertaining.

Since you two are bombing me, I will take this opportunity to respond. Hang tight.

Here is the basis for the difference in our opinions. You are more worried about how many titles can be won in a class your team happens to dominate. By your reasoning, the New England Patriots could drop out of the NFL and play 10 games each year along with a playoff bracket with 50 5th grade teams, win the title, and you call that success. That's not what we call that where I come from.

Again you take a single season, and want to make comparisons. I am talking over a DECADE. FYI, Mayfield will again win a title in 2A without a lot of trouble barring disasterous injuries.

If Bowling Green leaves 5A why would Johnson Central want to play in a watered down 5A when 4A has the better teams this year?

Mostly because they want the challenge of winning at a higher level, and deservedly so. If 5A proves to be too weak for them, then they can attempt 6A a decade later.

What happens to the lower tier 6A Teams like Dunbar, Muhlenberg County, etc? Do they get the option to play down?

YES. Most definitely. If teams that are consistently in a class that they are overmatched in want to move down to a more competitive class, then they should be afforded that opportunity also. The cream of the crop will continue to rise.

The even numbered classes will be a catch all between the best teams playing up and the good teams wanting to play the best teams and not wanting to move.

I am talking about all teams being on a talent level that suits them. Yes, school size is a good starting place to decide these levels, but by no means the end all be all.

This is exactly what we have now. i thought you would like that. Lets do not ask schools to excel even more, let's make sure they are all happy getting a Welfare Trophy so they have something to brag about. A watered down, highly overrated, first place finish without being challenged.

This is par for the course. I am a little surprised here, but I should have known. As I said last year, the WEST side of the bracket is 100 times more competitive in 3A than is the EAST side. Seems to be more of the same this season. Belfry will have to play one of these teams in Bowling Green, and could very well dominate that game too, NO DOUBT. But, they had to perform in ONE game. Let's don't shake up things so that the best 4 or 8 teams play head to head at the end. Not saying the outcome is any different (all credit goes to Belfry). I don't believe anybody would argue that Belfry had a cake walk to Bowling Green while the WEST is up for grabs. BOO HOO. Yes, I thought moving Caldwell up to 3A was a mistake at first, but now I have changed my mind and see that moving them up was the best thing for them. Asking this school to keep up the high expectations that have been brought on them is and is an excellent challenge for this team. Will it produce a ring every season? NOPE. Will it ever? Who knows. But, I wouldn't want it any other way. You see guys, when someone or some group achieves a higher standard, the only thing to do then is to ask for more. Caldwell has showed they are very competitive in this class and it seems to fit them. Now, their next step is to become that dominate team in 3A. This is their current challenge. One that Mayfield was obviously ready for, accepted it, and thrived from it in 2A. If you are fine with putting "running clock" scores on teams every game, and not be challenged that is your right to do so. All hail Belfry, the best team in the state of Kentucky (bar about 110 others, because for God's sake let's don't imply they should play against better competition) as the Class 3A State Champion!!!!

You crack me up Tiger. I swear to God, I love you.

This logic is insane. By all means, Alabama should have to play NFL teams while their at it too. It's just unfair:isurrender:
