He was great for Louisville at the time, and he helped Louisville take steps forward after Kragthorpe. He get Louisville back to being relevant. That being said, he lacked in areas. He is not offensive minded, many think he held Teddy back. His staff put ZERO effort into special teams, something you are now seeing at Texas as well. Getslow touched on a couple other things as well.

There have been a lot of coaches over the years in basketball and football, that have ridden short term success (due to a key player), to a better job.

 

I just wonder if Teddy didn't help cover up Charlie's coaching warts, so to speak.

I'd be surprised if it doesn't happen before the end of the season. He will get another chance as a head coach, where is the bigger question.

I definitely feel that he held back Teddy's full potential with his old-fashioned philosophy about offense; Strong would've liked to win every single game 10-3 if he could have. Still, his clock-control ideas about offense were always betrayed by his inability to recruit offensive linemen, something Petrino has had to work hard to rebuild in his return to Louisville.

 

But yeah, Teddy's ability to pull wins out of nowhere covered a lot of his shortcomings.

 

If it feels like I'm piling on, that's not my intention, he built Louisville back up and his recruiting and philosophy on defense set the framework for what we've seen defensively under Todd Grantham as well. But he did have some problems and it's only on seeing what Petrino can do with an offense he's rebuilt himself that we all realize just how slow and flawed the offensive and special teams facets of the game were under Strong.

I agree. At this point, FSU's boosters would be less than thrilled by the prospect of Charlie Strong.

Absolutely they would be. I think there are 7 Athletic Departments and Boosters programs that feel like they have the best open coaching job (Texas, OU, USC, FSU, LSU, Penn State, Notre Dame, and Oregon) but there are only 2 or 3 truly program changing HC's available unless you can poach from the NFL or other big time schools (like LSU potentially getting Jimbo from FSU)

I often feel Andre Woodson made Joker Philips look like one of the top Offensive Coordinators in college football and was responsible for Joker getting the coach in waiting job.
