Hounds got hot and beat the Rebels in Corbin and I think won the next one at home as well before playing their kind of ball in the final and claiming the title.

 

That Somerset team was always the best Bunny team I ever saw on a field. 10-1 and not able to go to the playoffs.

 

Kind of like Boyle in '79. 9-1 and unable to go either because of one bad game.

I was in 8th grade. That is the biggest crowd I've ever seen at a Somerset game. Tony Massey took one about 70 yards on the 80s version of a zone read. Corbin scored and went for 2 but couldn't complete the pass. The teams played most of the rest of the game between the 30s. Great game. Was Dunkum the quarterback for Corbin?

So Tilghman won state with 6 losses. Nobody else has tied that or lost more.

In the 2nd round of the playoffs that year, LexCath beat Danville on a last second hail mary and Bourbon beat Boyle. Both games were in Danville that night. So, you had one of those situations where the 3 and 4 seed from the same district ended up playing in the region championship.

I think PT was 1-2 in District play during the regular season. Beat Webster then lost to Union and McLean. Then ended up beating Union in 2nd round that year. Ex UK linebacker Josh Forrest played WR on that PT team

Bourbon was the 3 seed. Boyle was undefeated and won the district. Bourbon won their playoff opener (at Somerset, I think), then won at Boyle in a mudbowl in the second round. That same night, Catholic (4 seed) went to Danville and won. Bourbon hosted and beat Lexington Catholic in the region final the next week, again in the mud.

That was in the days of the sub-districts. It was actually Somerset, Corbin, Middleboro and Wayne County. I know my 8th grade and freshman years Somerset, Corbin and Middleboro were all ranked and only one could go to the playoffs.

That was '03. They didn't start 0-5, though. It was either 0-4 or 1-4. They lost their district to Seneca, then reeled off 10 or 11 wins in a row, beating St. X 17-14 in the championship game.

 

We also lost 4 in a row in 1994 and won state. I believe it was Ben Davis, X, Central, and then Eastern for the first ever loss to them. That team had some miracle wins in the playoffs against Doss and Central.

Until 1982 Boyle and Somerset were in the same District and Corbin and Middlesboro comprised the other District. That annual matchup was a "Winner take all" game. Boyle still had Garrard and Russell County and for a while Casey County in their District.
