Lawnmower Repair (NKY)

Featured Replies

My Troy-Bilt push mower died recently. Had been sputtering a little bit the past couple of times out, so I changed the spark plug, but no improvement. My son used it the last time, and had to put in some gas mid-way thru. Then we couldn't get it started again. I noticed some black flecks in the bottom of the gas tank, so I'm assuming I got some dirty gas somehow and now either the fuel line and/or the carburetor is clogged.

I'm not the most mechanically inclined to begin with, but the biggest issue I have with trying to clean/repair this myself is space. We don't have a garage, and I don't have any extra space in the storage shed to be able to work on it, and not lose any parts in the process.

So, does anybody know of someone who does repair work on push mowers in NKY? Looking for probably either Boone, Kenton or Grant County.

Crescent Springs Hardware. 859-341-0800. Probably not the cheapest but you cannot beat their work. If they can't fix it...it can't be fixed.

If you do decide to work on it yourself they will sell you the parts you need and help you out with some advice if you need it. They are a family owned business and VERY friendly.

In Campbell County I've used Southern States in the past.

Personally I would remove the gas tank and clean it out. Simply clamp the hose and remove it at the gas shut off instead of at the tank. It's usually only 3 screws or so that hold the tank on.

Use something like this to clamp the hose. The rubber on it is so you don't damage your hose. Some rubber bands around it will do the same. It will be much easier to drain and clean out that way.

You can run the dirty gas through a coffee filter in a funnel to save it.

They shut down their small engine repair shop.

You bring up a great point....indirectly. Google is your friend.

Small engine repair can be tricky for someone with little or no experience. A little time at the computer can give you ideas about how to diagnose and repair small engines. Many times the problem is a common problem that a lot of other people have experienced as well.

Yep. I wouldn't recommend rebuilding a carb to just anyone, but a fuel filter is pretty simple.

Just had a similar issue. Replaced the fuel filter and that solved the issue.

Easy fix with a pair of pliers. Filter should be easy to see on the fuel line leading from the tank. Google/utube has had some fixes for things I would have never guessed would be out there.

Difference between 10$ fix or 60$ fix.

What's the shelf life a push mower nowadays? Mine's getting pretty old. Not sure it's worth the drama of trying to get it ready for next spring. Might splurge on a new one if I can get a great deal. Mine is 16+ years old.

My push mower is 24 years old.

I got 14 out of mine before everything but the engine fell apart on me. Current one is 2 years old and it started spewing oil this week. I need to drop it off to get fixed.
