Not pulling any punches. I agree to a point. Holmes,Dixie or Scott only have to beat the other basically to make the playoffs. a 5 team district is better than an 8 team district anyday. I disagree with the letting teams play up. If you are going to make classes then make classes and keep them. So what if HHS and CCH have to travel They were before, weren't they (Lloyd and Newport have for years and I am sure that they don't get the kind of money that CCH and HHs do)? As far as a rivalry goes Well then They could have played week 11.

I think Beechwood came out a winner, considering two of its biggest opponents will no longer be in 1A. Them and Mayfield might battle for the crown year in year out now.

I agree. If your placed in a class you play in that class. Teams shouldnt get to pick which class they are going to play in. Either way teams that won before are still going to win no matter how many classes they make.

On one hand they go from an 8 team district with 4 making the playoffs to a 5team district with 4 making the playoffs.................but then the district just got a lot harder with Highlands and CovCath added to it. So I guess all they have to do is beat each other to make the playoffs, but winning the district is basically a 0% chance.

 

Holmes in particular is IMO getting a rough trip. They had a chance of being moved down to 3A (in the current 4 class system) and would have been in the CovCath/Highlands/Grant Co district so I guess their district chances would be about the same as they are under the 07 alignment. Or if Highlands and CovCath stay put in 3A and 4A they (Holmes and Scott) join Dixie and Team XXX in a four team district?

This thread is EXACTLY why the ruling is terrible. We are talking about who the "winners" are because they dont have to play tougher competition.

Mayfield will be in the hunt now every year. Where as right now we have rebuilding years with teams that dont have realistic chances. The reason being is that in class 1A at this moment there are several more teams you have to go through.

I would guess Highlands and CovCath decided that the district competition (Holmes, Dixie, Scott, each other) and the potential state match-ups in 5A were more attractive than 4A.

 

That's 4 local district games, add in a couple of potential games against local 6A schools like Boone Co, Ryle, Conner, Campbell, SK, and then add in some Ohio powers and a Trinity or St.X and it all works out (money-wise and competition-wise).

I would say most of the "A" programs are losers, with Bwood and Mayfield present. I thought Bwood would make the jump to "AA".

Whitley Co. goes from a district which Madison Central, GRC, South laurel, Lincoln Co. and North Laurel to one with Letcher Central, Perry Central, Clay Co. and North Laurel. The other district in the region is not nearly as strong in the new alignment as in the old.

 

The Colonels should have an opportunity to do real well in the playoffs with an opportunity to play for a regional title in the next few years.

I honestly did not understand the "football funds" other sports part for Beechwood because I would think that a five team district with HC, NCC, Lloyd, and Newport and 6 non-district games of choice would be more gate than being in with Dayton, Bellevue, and Ludlow, and eventually Walton I guess and 6 non-district games of choice but even that aside it is up to Beechwood to play in whatever class they want to.

As far as "funding other sports" --right now (or more like last year) 3 games paid the bills for Beechwood (not saying that the other games didn't help--but these carried the load):

Alter

NCC

Newark Catholic.

 

2 out of the 3 were none district games-and they all brought in some cash for the other sports--but overall--it still probably didn't cover everything--and they count on that money (independent school district).

 

Now--add 3 more solid non-district games. (I think that Lloyd will be dropped in the near future). Now--Beechwood isn't one to shy away from good games and neither is Coach Rash (there have been years with some bad games--but that is because a lot of bigger schools wouldn't schedule them). Add 3 more non-district games--and things start to add up--with a little extra. Think about things like the field--that was basically a guaranteed loan. They still owe money on that for sure.

 

So--hopefully--that makes a little more sense. It could have also happened if they moved up--but what is the gain? Nothing (contrary to what Birdsfan refuses to explain in detail)

 

Now--look at things from a higher level (and I hate to put it like this because I have a good feeling about how things will turn out):

*New Head Coach (following a legend)

*New AD

*2 year wait before moving up (and I feel like there were some people who knew that they were only going to have to wait 2 years). If it makes sense--they can move up quickly.

 

So--if any of this sounds bad--I apologize up front (hopefully it doesn't sound arrogant or condescending--I have a tendency to put things down in that manner). I am just trying to lay down the facts.

 

Birdsfan said that it makes no sense--but--the determining factor to me is that Beechwood's district contains NKY schools. I could understand where he is coming from if Beechwood would have had to travel--but I can't understand the non-fact based argument.
